Rolling back Apple TV 2 to firmware 4.1

Is it possible to downgrade my apple TV firmware from 4.2.1 to the original 4.1?

I've tried putting it into DFU mode and restoring using the old ipsw file but it always fails at the stage where it tries to verify the file with apple (this is the apple version of 4.1 and not a custom build version).

You have to have your SHSH blobs for the target firmware. In this case iOS 4.1. If you don't have them, you cannot go back to that version.
