I haven't seen a review for this case yet on here so here it is! Been using this case for a few days and definitely one of my top picks out of my collection. I got it off Amazon for $10 + shipping.

rooCASE Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display Case - Slim Shell Origami Case

I found that the folding part of the front flap was pretty interesting and new to me. You can fold it like the original Apple Smart Cover or like their "Origami" style. both which are pretty stable. However, the Origami style allows you to stand it up portrait view as well. I got the gray one which has a smooth/matte finish on it and it feels quite nice to the touch. It's also pretty lightweight which is always a plus.

Check out the pics for a better visual.

I'll throw in another positive vote for this case. It does exactly what I wanted in a case:
  • Adds minimal bulk
  • Still folds into a typing position without any kind of flap or slot on the back cover (again, minimal bulk).
  • I really like the ability to support standing in portrait mode, and find I use that a lot.
  • Fit and finish are good. The material adds a little grip, which is great because I found the naked iPad a little slippery.
  • Given how narrow the bezel of the mini is when holding in portrait mode, I like the slight bit of extra grip I can get on the sides without affecting. the touch-sensitive area of the screen.
  • Very reasonable price: $15 (a fourth of the price of Apple's smart case with fewer features)

I had a Khomo case for my iPad2 that I really liked; however, that company hasn't released an updated case for the Retina iPad Mini. I had also considerd the Poetic case, as I wasn't certain I wanted the origami folds. However, going forward, RooCase is now my go-to minimalist case. I'm very pleased.

so this case does both portrait and landscape, looks like it gives a little protection. the front is a smart cover so it wakes the device automatically?

Is it sturdy while in portrait mode?

I have the iPad air version and it does unlock the devices and locks it. It is pretty sturdy in both orientations. I recommend it.

Does the flap stay put when folded behind the case? Like is there a magnet to hold it in place?

Is it possible to weight the case? I have the 3d version, but its a bit heavy at 150g+
