routing traffic through a computer?

At school i have a single internet jack and I'm not allowed to use a router. Is there a way to have one computer connected and other computers using airport or something to route traffic through the first computer?

in system prefs, click on sharing and then click on the internet tab. then share connection from built-in ethernet to computers using airport. then click the start button.
also if you don't have airport cards for the other computers you can share it over firewire

Does someone physically check your connection? If not, then you can have a router. Even if your Mac is registered with a MAC address, most routers allow you to inout this MAC address and use the router as gateway and then connect the client machines with DHCP. Its nearly impossible to tell unless they check your plug in the room.

i know that kids have been turned off for having routers (or at least i'm told). how do i set it up so that this wouldn't happen?

It depends on your router.

But you use SystemPreferences to get your MAC address. Its a alphanmeric set of numbers/letters.

In the router control area, you can set the MAC address, name, etc. of the machine.

Obviously, they may have some ability to determine if you are breaking the rules by checking bandwidth, packets and such, so be smart.

You can also use internet sharing on your macx and just connect the othe machines via a HUB.
