Roxio Crunch- Could this persuade me to get an apple TV?

I am 99% sure this will only work with unprotected DVD's (eg home movies etc). this is the case with Toast and Popcorn at the moment.

This is basically an improved version of popcorn. In order to convert your dvd's to video files for appleTV you need to:

1. Use mactheripper to copy the DVD to your Desktop
2. Use Crunch to convert that DVD to a movie file

This is better for the DVD drive as it will only spin for like 10 mins, and you can line up multiple DVD's to copy this way too.
 
I think your'e right- I read un protected DVD's which is not going to let me add my purchased titles. I have never been into pirating or copying CD's or DVD's and only want to put my brought content on to itunes. (Just my thing Iv'e always considered it stealing, just because you CAN do it, doesn't mean to say it's right, I know I am very much in the minority (not holier than though) but it's the way I am, )

Until I can do this apple TV is pretty useless and I think i would be better off with an airport for palying music through my hifi.

There's already an open source solution for you - Handbrake. It will convert the VOB files to H.264 with up to Dolby Pro Logic II surround that will work perfectly in iTunes and with the Apple TV. I've been doing this since I got the Apple TV. Works fabulously.

What version of Handbrake are you using? Another thread claimed they were frequently having problems with audio. Just curious.

I'm using the 0.8.5b version. This is the first one that supports Dobly Pro Logic II transcoding. I've not had any problems with audio, but sometimes I have problems with slow frame-rate conversion (e.g., 6 fps). I'm not sure what's going on with it; when I launch Activity Monitor there's nothing in the list that is consuming cycles. If I reboot, I get the frame rate back up to 60 fps or so (on my Macbook).

Using the newest version of handbrake converting VOB files to mp4 i often get about 2 minutes of audio and then nothing. Strangely it seems to be totally random.

Haven't downloaded it myself, but it's tagline sure seems to promise what you want:

Store your DVDs on your Mac, then leave them behind.

Of course, I don't know about it's Apple TV/Front Row integration, which seems like an obvious no-brainer, so I imagine they're working on it.
 
DriveIn encrypts the ripped files, so I doubt they'd work on :apple: TV. Handbrake is quite nice, though I don't have an aTV so I can't tell ya how easily they work on it.

I like VisualHub, though, but you'd need something else to rip the DVD, like Mactheripper.
 
I have problems with Handbrake

I having no end of problems using Handbrake and have more or less given up. I would like to try the Roxio product first before buying it as I am not confident that it will be any better than Handbrake. In case you ask I am using an 8-core Mac.

DriveIn encrypts the VOB files after ripping (DRM). That's how they get away with saying it can rip commercial DVDs.

Also, Crunch uses QuickTime to encode h.264/MPEG4—so be prepared for long encoding times.

Handbrake is still the best choice, and it's free. Use Visual Hub for any other files you need to convert.
 
Though I haven't used Crunch, I do use VisualHub and it works very well (and is half the price).

Mac the Ripper + VisualHub = DVD goodness on your AppleTV!
