the rubber around the head of the earphones started peeling off again after 4-5 month use.
apple has already replaced my original pair because of something else but i remember they completely peeled off too with time.

my ipod is now out of warranty now.

its really annoying. anybody else experiencing the same thing?

Absolutely, on two sets I've had at least one of the rubber strips peel off. At one point I was able to hold it back together and it seemed to stick but the other pair just fell off... sucks.

well im not the only person with defective ears then!
i believe apple has made them like this so that people buy another pair of them..
anything we can do? consumer rights!

Same thing here, on two pairs, and I'm extremely careful with them. The rubber "goes bad" after a while, it's not wear and tear, the rubber simply turns into this clay-like substance after about a year. I don't know why they use such low quality materials in such an expensive product. I have earbuds that came with a cheap cassette walkman, imagine how old that is, they still work perfectly well and nothing is peeling.

I also find it very stupid that there's only one year of warranty on everything Apple. Every other electronic product has AT LEAST 2 years of warranty, free, you don't have to PAY for warranty (...Apple Care...).

yea it happens, ive had it happened

buuuuuuuut who cares? headphones are relatively cheap. go buy some

The rubber peeled off mine after about a year of use. What I did was went to the shop and bought some new ones after this period.
The problem was solved perfectly, and as a bonus I have a brand new set!
Great times. :D

Exactly the same prob here. I just ripped the rubber stuff off , still using those earbuds though. :D

I'm pretty sure Apple's headphones have always been cheap rubbish. Try a set of Sennheisers - they come with a 2 year warranty :D

haha. i still find those pretty good earphones. and ofcourse... nice design.

Yeah, I like the hard white plastic on the new ones much better then the rubber on the old ones, and of course the headphones are of fair sound quality. ;)

Yeah, they are pretty good. You can really recognize an iPod/iPhone user by those headphones lol :d

Don't have an ipod yet (32 GB touch coming soon), but I got some $40 v moda isolating earbuds at Costco. I know there are better, more expensive options in earbuds. But these make the cheapies seem like real crap.

Happened to all of my later apple earphones. Figured that they weren't worth the money in the end anyway and ended up buying some Sennheiser CX300's. Didn't regret it in the slightest.

So can pickpockets and muggers; they have been known to target victims in crowd situations (sports events, subways) by the iconic white earbuds.

If you live in an area notorious for such crimes, or spend a significant time in crowds, getting a different set of in-ear monitors may save you from would-be thieves.

I have a set of V-Moda Vibes for my new nano. Only $59 at the Apple Store, and they sound and fit considerably better than the standard Apple set.

Same model I got! Glad I bought them at Costco! :D They are very nice, and would be worth $60 to me, though. ;)

Yeah mine are peeling as well. While it is true that headphones are cheap, it is also untrue as well. for a college kid i need my stuff to last when i buy because money isnt that easy to buy and plus we need it for our ah... *cough cough* extracurriculars.

In what pocket do you have your iPhone/iPod? I got mine in the right pocket of my jeans.... I find it very hard to believe that some pickpocket would be able to get my iPod, disconnect the headphones and run away with it.

But you're right about the earphones. Everybody knows they are iPod ear buds.

same thing, bought my ipod shuffle last summer and this summer ~1 year after the rubber on the earphones came off
i really dont like the earbuds with sound isolation.. they drop from my ear and not so comfy..

In-ears? I really cant use those earbuds man. They keep falling out of my ears :D

then get their px200 series. cheap and sound good and are on the ear so they won't fall off unless your head falls off in which case you have a very serious problem. if your head falls off, report to the nearest morgue.
