Hi, i would like to ask you question about monitors.
Now try to decide if i will buy some gigabyte monitor 4K 144hz with USB C support. . There are some rumors about new Apple pro motion external monitors. Now i own macbook pro 14, it has just DP. 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. Do you think that after they release for example 5k 120hz external monitor, will be there way how to connect it to todays macbooks? Does DP 1.4 enough bandwitch with some (DSC) mode to connet 5k 120hz ? Thanks for answer.

DP 1.4 has just enough bandwidth for 5K120 using DSC@12bpp which is what Apple uses for 6K60 (except 6K60 only requires HBR2 link rate while 5K120 will require HBR3 link rate unless you use DSC@8bpp).

I am looking into trying to get DSC@8bpp for 8K60. macOS defaults to DSC@12bpp so it will require a patch unless Apple adds support.

Is the GB monitor you're considering the FV43U? I have one. I wouldn't recommend it.

Nope M28 or M32 but i think they are very simillar panels. Can you describe pls your issues?

Joe thanks for reply. I really hope that they will release 4k or 5k 120 hz display. Yesterday i read little bit about display port and it looks that 5k 120 hz with DSC is possible, what about 6k 120 hz?

6K120 needs a pixel clock of ≈2620MHz (using CVT-RB2 calculation). This is possible with HBR3 link rate if you use DSC @ 9 bpp.

Apple could use a tiled option over Thunderbolt. Each tile still requires DSC but the bpp can be increased to Apple's usual 12bpp or even up to 15bpp though that would leave little bandwidth for USB writes to the display. Apple could support a non-DSC mode using 4:2:0 dual tile mode (equivalent to 12bpp for 8bpc or 15bpp for 10bpc to allow HDR). Using DSC or 4:2:0 for a tiled display would be a first.

It's just a relatively poor quality display for the money. I frequently have all sorts of little issues. They are also a BGR sub-pixel layout.

Gigabyte in general is a poor quality company. I've had issues with a ton of their hardware (multiple dead motherboards, GPU's).
