I've been hankering to buy either an iPHone or an iPad. I havent' gotten the phone because of cost (I get a free BB every two years) and AT&T (since a phone's main purpose is a phone, it's not really acceptable to me that almost everyone I speak with in Manhattan says AT&T's service is unreliable).

So then I thought about the iPad. It's more expensive, and I'd need AT&T's 3g to use it on the train. My main holdback is that I assume Apple will be coming out with a next generation that will have a phone and better features?

Any rumors on when? Or am I expecting too much from this?

A phone in an iPad? LOLz.

The damn thing hasn't even launched in most countries. Buy it now, it won't get an update for quite some time.

There are rumours of course, usually centered around the likes of front and back facing camera's etc. As for a release for the second gen iPad, some seem to be suggesting that an annual refresh will be likely, to follow on the iPhone model. Personally I think the wait for a second generation iPad will be a little longer than a year. I believe Apple will want to seal as much market share with the current model as possible (or at least get to a point where they can meet demand and actually have the product launched in every territory they intend on launching, neither of which are happening at the moment).

As for waiting, I think you've got to weigh up what sort of features you really need against what is most likely to come next. I was aware of Apple's track record of first gen releases and annual hardware revisions when I bought my iPad, but I was happy to do so because none of the rumoured features are necessary for me. Front and back facing camera's are never going to be enough to tempt me into an upgrade because I don't need them (and certainly never notice they're missing) on my current model. In the same way that I'm still happy with my iPhone 3G and have no intentions to upgrade at least for another year, I think the iPad I have now will be good for my needs for several years yet. I wouldn't have bought one otherwise. I don't spend £400+ on a piece of technology for it to last only a year on principal as much as anything else.

As for a phone built into the next iPad, I think that's almost certainly not going to happen.

Yeah I would just go ahead and buy it now as well. They have shortages right now because of LG (they make the screen), so i would get it as soon as possible as it may be hard to find in a few weeks or so. It probably will get updated in March 2011 or so, but it probably definitely won't get a phone feature in it. When the update comes out just sell your current gen. Apple products are really good at keeping their resale value. So just take a 100-150 dollar hit and buy the new one if you really need it.

they haven't been able to release the ipad in all markets yet. so don't expect an update before april 2011.

the main feature of the next update is probably a camera not much more. if you absolutely need the camera then you have to wait or get an iphone.

since apple is pushing facetime a lot there may be a chance apple allows a camera through a dock connector but it's very unlikely.

no phone capability ever. however skype works ok.

All these "ipad2 rumours" threads should be merged.

You're never getting a phone built into an iPad. I can't imagine anything more ridiculous. You can use an iPhone headset and make calls with Skype if you really want to.

The only thing that could improve the iPad is a camera (ie. for FaceTime, not for taking snaps - another ridiculous idea) and better resolution on the screen. Any other improvements would be hardware-based, such as memory, processor, battery life.

The iPad is a phenomenal product. Go buy one now if you really want one.

I'm surprise MODS haven't locked these threads.

Every sub-forum should have two stickies...

"Should I wait for the Next Generation?"

"What will the Next Generation have?"

I think you need get your story straight first. Iphone costs just about same as ipad. 16GB iphone starts with 599 dollars with no contract. Iphone is cheaper if you put 2 years contract with AT&T, but without it, it costs more. Ipad doesn't require any contract. The ipad 3G (16GB) costs 629 dollars.

Sure, apple will make a phone that has 9.7 inch screen. Sure. Stop trolling.

There won't be a phone in the next iPad, or any revision after that. Apple makes a phone; it's called the iPhone.
If you have a phone, and don't need a new one, go for the iPad. The next revision will be better than the current one. But iPad 3 will be better than iPad 2...and so on.
If you have the funds and you want the device, purchase it and enjoy it.

If your work pays for your phone and your phone bill then you'd be a bit silly to pay for your own two year contract, no? So get the pad.

If your work is happy to pay for the contract if you pay the (subsidised) cost of the handset then I'd probably get the phone.

As for iPad mark II, Ver. I still hasn't been fully launched. They are selling as many as they can make and there is supply botle-necks with screens.

I can't see Apple begining to ramp up production of model 2 quite yet, can you? As for the phone app in iPad: not going to happen. Will Face-time come to iPad II sure, but to be honest I do think it's use is still limited given it is only to "like device". A bit like the up comming Cisco tablet.

This has always been my plan...selling old iphone pays for new ones...bought my first iPhone sold it on ebay when 3G came out skipped 3Gs, and sold my 3G when the 4 came out...I got $150 for it, so a new Iphone every two years cost me $50..i think it is a good deal.

I plan on doing the same with the pad...

Some more changes for IPAD 2

Yor right about the camera but i thing Ipad 2 will have the below:

1) ARM Cortex-9 dual core 1.3Ghz Based chip designed by PA Semi and Instisity which Apple purchased. The A4 processor (ARM Cortex 8 single core) was designed and tested September 2009, rumour has it that the PA Semi team has been working on processor for Apple since 2008 when it was purchased by them and the development cycle for this is 3 years which will be around April 2011 for release.

2) More RAM up from 256MB to 512MB or even 1GB

3) Retina display with a higher pixel density like the Iphone 4, this would make E-book's easier to read and the screen more crisp for viewing. Possibly 3072 X 2304 resolution which would bring it in line with 329dpi of the iphone 4

4) Storage in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB no more 16GB model

I am hoping for a dock port hand set and rotary dial app. How unsweet would that be?

He is correct about the cameras because ? (Please don't say because every device being manufactured has one)

More ram? With multitasking coming soon, I can see the possibility.

Retina display??? Look at what you wrote, and compare that resolution to your desktop display. Are we going to get quad video cards to drive the display at that high of a resolution ?

Storage... Who knows ??? But I doubt it seriously.

Why is so many people worried about next gen, when first gen just came out?

I know! I feel like I don't have time to enjoy the current model, because the forum is always filled with talks about the next gen! Yes, there are many things lacking / not perfect about the current gen, but can't we talk about that without turning it into speculations about what the next gen might or might not have? It might be semantics, but exchanges like this would feel more productive:

"I wish the next gen will have X Y and Z"
"Yes I agree, I'd also like W."
"Personally I feel no need for W because..."

Instead, we are getting a lot of::

"The next gen will have X!"
"No, it won't!"
"Yes it will!"
"NO. IT WON'T!"
and on and on...

Did you go to the Toyota dealership right when the 2011 vehicles hit the lot and ask them if you should buy something due to the rumors of the 2012 models hitting in about another year?

I would imagine Apple will try to get a fair bit of milage out of iOS 4 for iPad before a hardware update, which will surely bring a one or two nice surprises.

It's quite fun to play the guessing game with the iPads updates though, see if they carve out their own timeframe for updates that Apple has seemingly imposed upon itself with the iPhone (June/July) and the iPod(September) lines. Could we expect a consistent annual March update from it, who knows?

You'll be paying well over a grand for that

I love my iPad just the way it is.

I love it so much I bought a 2nd one, just the way it is.

I believe the iPad, just the way it is, is a wonderful bit of technology.

And I'm glad I am experiencing this technology first hand instead of watching others have their/the fun from the sidelines.

I'm not full of indecision & mentally wringing my hands over what may or may not be next year.

I have no regrets & I'm enjoying myself immensely.

If you can afford it, buy it & enjoy yourself.:D
