Runaway launchd

I had the System Monitor running in the Dock while doing some CLI work, and I noticed that all four CPU cores were running while I was not doing anything with the system. I opened SM up and found that launchd, UserEventAgent, and mds_stores were hard at work doing something-or-other. I am not running TM, and had nothing else of my own running in background, it was just El Cap twiddling it's thumbs (to be polite). I stopped everything that was active/asleep on the Dock, with no change to the situation (the screen shot was after I'd done this). A reboot fixed the problem (for now), but I see other complaints here and there on the Intertubes about this, but no real answers other than "known bug, file bug report just in case" (from last Fall). Any others seeing this?

You need to look at the system logs in Console to find more detail about what launchd might be doing.

I did, but there's so much being written into the system log these days, most of them appearing to be dire warnings of bad juju, it's hard to tell what might actually be pertinent to the problem. If I filter on launchd there's not really anything in the log during the period of the runaway. There are a number of "LOG MESSAGE QUOTE EXCEEDED" messages from com.apple.CDScheduler starting about the time of the runaway, and none after the reboot. What's that beastie do?

I do have a UPS on my iMac, and as in the referenced post I've had no problems with it until I upgraded to El Capitan. I wonder if this is related to the TM problem with a USB-connected UPS, which is why I passed on El Capitan when it first came out.
