Running 2 imacs - but using one as just a dual screen or....??

Hey,

I just decided to stay with my original order - even though I know a new iMac is soon to be released.

So will stay with my original iMac 27" order:

iMac 27"
i7 2,93 Ghz
256 SSD
2 TB HDD
5750 Radeon 1 GB
8 GB RAM

I thought about having dual 27" screens as I will start to do web designing again.
I will purchase one of the new iMac 27" models - once it hits the market in 2-3-4 months time - with at least the same specs of the one I just ordered.

What would be the best way of running this dual system ?

I have a large enough desk so I could run both iMacs separately but for effective work, I think running them in dual monitor mode would be better - but not sure.....

Will code in Espresso and Coda and edit photos and pics in Aperture.
It's nice to have one screen for photo editing and another entirely devoted to coding

So what will you recommend - using my second iMac 27" as a dual monitor (if possible) or use both separately, which means I have to use 2 keyboards (not a big problem though the way my desk is designed in a 90 degree setup)

How about just buying the 27'' Display at 999$.

Anyway.

The 27'' iMac can work as an external display (which mean only the display, not the computer part, is in use). Never tried it, but with a Mini DisplayPort cable you will be able to hook the other iMac and use is as a screen.

But even then, i don't see the point of also buying another iMac with those spec and not using it. So i'd say. if you feel like having both of everything, use the second computer.

...anyway, what are we supposed to answer, i mean it's up to you to know what kind of use you want from these computers. If you want to do some heavy task on both screen, then use them both as computers. If you feel that one iMac is enough to compute everything at once, then use the second as a monitor.

But I mean, there is no answer that we can give you.

You can use Teleport to control two Macs with one set of KB and mouse. Also, when in Target Display Mode, you can VNC to the other iMac to control it.

I don't think it is worth it to get two high power iMacs since you can only use one at the time. You could look into low-end iMac as those aren't much more than the Cinema Display. That would give you two similar monitors and you could still use the other Mac for some tasks (e.g. put it to encode something while working on the other one).
