Purchased my first mac a few months back and love it. Is it a laptop that you can run games on without doing any upgrades. I like to play games like monopoly; military strategy games; scrabble. Thanks for any info. I don't want to down load a game and mess up my mac.

Stick with Apple's Mac App Store. Anything there is going to meet Apple's standards and will be safe.
If you get a little more interested in venturing out beyond the walled garden, try macgamefiles.com. They have free demos for download, full games for sale (via links), patches to keep your games up to date.

I use boot camp and boot into Windows, and play games there. But I don't recommend it. Really I only do that now because I play with Windows users who are my friends. So I am agreeing with Irishman, the app store has a surprising plethora of games available. If you do want to venture into the world of buying a copy of Windows and dual booting, I find anything made before 2008 runs pretty decent.
Might I also recommend Rome Total War? It is a military strategy game that was ported to Mac. Also check out Feral Interactive, they work on porting Windows titles to Mac.

My wife has a circa 2007 MacBook which has been replaced by the 13" MBP. She plays all sorts of casual games on it, no problem. The most ambitious is Spore which runs adequately. I really don't see a need to stick exclusively with the App Store, however for any game you play a demo is always best to nail down performance. If you want to go with Windows to play games (Bootcamp) you can feel safe that what happens on the Windows partitioned drive stays on Windows. Activity there should not mess up your Mac partition/MacOS.
You can also download Steam if you want to try some more games. It's basically the go to app for downloading games, Mac or Windows.

This. Steam is better than the Apple App Store, in my opinion. More options and the games can be run on Mac or Windows.
