Running out of space on the internal hard drive- looking to add an external.

Questions:
  • Will Lightroom performance suffer significantly if I keep the photo files on an external drive?
  • Which external drive do you recommend?

Thanks!

What interfaces do you have? Also depends how you have Lightroom setup

I run my Lightroom on an external Freecom Datatank (via firewire 400). It seems to be fine for my use. Not really noticed anyslow down.

You could keep the image on the external disk and the library on you internal HDD. That might improve performance.

With a high performance external disk system you might even see performance improve. FW800 is fast. If there are two drives in the ox configured as a striped array then it can be very fast.

But you WILL need a backup system. No matter what you buy figure out how you will back it up. A large external disk array is not as easy to backup as a small notebook drive.
