I'm running Windows 10 on a new build (10700, 64 GB RAM, 2x4k+1xQHD, Case designed for maximum cooling) and it's great for my workload. Runs cool and quiet and even looks good. I can run macOS through VNC to my 2015 MacBook Pro for Notes, Reminders, Numbers, iCal and Growly Notes and that's good enough for me. VNC performance isn't always as good as I'd like though I might be able to fix that with a new router. I could certainly run the same setup with Apple Silicon and something in a Mac Mini form factor. I run my heavy workloads on Windows so that would be fine. So that's probably what I would do when x64 macOS goes away. I would likely use my old macOS laptops until 2024 or 2025 or until they both break.

But, we have shiny new MacBooks coming out on Tuesday. I watched a few preview videos last night and it sounds nice. And then I remembered why I don't like the new MacBooks:

  • Touch Bar
  • USB-C
And why I'd probably prefer something like the Mini. I could just leave it in the corner somewhere and use it as a media server and to run my macOS apps. And eventually it could run more. But I wouldn't need it to.

We'll see next Tuesday. I'm prepared to be disappointed. Though maybe they'll do a MacBook without the TouchBar. What I'd absolutely love is a 13-inch without the TouchBar.

If they keep differentiating the consumer and the prosumer lines via the Touch Bar, I can certainly see a MacBook Air without it. Should perform similar enough to your 10700 anyway ;)

My iPad Mini has an A12. A MacBook with A12 performance would be fine. I actually looked into trying to do VNC into my iPad Mini as that would work for me - but Apple doesn't allow you to do this. I would really love to be able to screen share from a PC (Mac or Windows) into an iPhone or iPad.

My plan is to have a nice mac with a dinky windows pc right next to it . For me most of what i do can be done in macOS, or through the cloud with a shadow.tech cloud gaming rig. With apple moving to apple silicon i just see a few small use cases where local x86 hardware could be useful. Mainly testing friends x86 docker images and such wich i will either use my windows tower or keep a x86 macc close by
