Simple in concept but this project is running into some serious obstacles. Firstly, its interesting to note that its impossible to install Windows 7 (maybe 8 as well) from an external optical. Since I had long ago removed the internal superdrive and replaced with SSD, I cant even install W7 on bootcamp. There appear to be some work arounds but results seem to be mixed. In addition, the older hardware of the 1,1 does not allow a USB W7 install...the option which appears on the new macbooks is not even available.
The simple solution seems to be to buy a new internal optical but its pretty much impossible to find the IDE drive I need. I dont think they even make these anymore. Yes, I can try to connect the SATA from the motherboard but this would require tearing everything down just to reach the connector on the 2006 1,1. Ive done it before and its not fun.
It really does seem to be the end of the road for the 2006 1,1. No longer supported by ML and I cant even use this as a Windows machine. I have not even hit the "hack" part of the upgrade which is running OSX ML as a virtual machine.
I find myself running into the old philosophical questions again....do I really want to start gaming again? Fallout Vegas will take away precious time from my life and the painful sunrise after an all night gaming session. Not to mention the motherboard will no longer benefit from faster GPUs.
Sure, I can run Office fine in a virtual machine and I like OSX but my 1,1 and I have been abandoned and unsupported by Apple. Yes, its lasted 6 years but it would cost me about 6k to get another comparable Mac Pro machine that will last 6 yrs. Imac would seem the obvious choice but the GPU will be obsolete in 3 yrs. Its looking more and more like a PC rig again.
