I'm just running the latest version of Adobe LR Classic and Photoshop, and I'm regularly getting a warning that I ran out of application memory. Anyone else running into the same issue and any possible remedy?
It feels like that the Adobe apps are getting worse and worse at memory management, just after opening. Lightroom Classic, the app is already using 18GB of RAM!! I'm on a MBP M1 Pro.

12.1 should fix this. Otherwise it is an Adobe issue.

You did run out of memory, look at that 12GB of swap used :D

Possible remedy:

1. Run Lightroom or Photoshop, not both at the same time.
2. Upgrade to 64GB of ram if you are still in the return window.
3. Wait and hope a future update (macOS or Adobe) fix the memory issue, if there is any issue (you said just after opening, is that without any file open? if so, it sounds like a bug).

Hmm, I use both LR and PS, with 16GB RAM 14" MBP, and push them fairly hard, and although memory pressure is often yellow, not had an issue. I would think 32GB RAM should be plenty in most cases.
Wondering what you are doing to need so much RAM - big files? multiple monitors?
The suggestion to not run LR at same time PS is not really viable - often need to go back and forth between them.

Anyway, some suggestions (which are not ideal, but might help):

Lightroom preferences > Performance > Use Graphics processor: Custom > uncheck "use Graphics processor for image processing," only check "Use GPU for display"
(This will reduce RAM LR is demanding for GPU acceleration. You can further reduce RAM LR demands for GPU by completely turning off "use graphics processor," but this will make zooming etc in Library module a bit choppy.)

Pause Face Detection in LR.

Photoshop preferences > Performance > Memory Usage > Let Photoshop use ~50%

Is everyone's experience similar to the OP's? I'm about to purchase a replacement MBP for my wife's 15" 3.1 i7, 16GB RAM, 2 TB SSD MBP.

She currently is using 1.6TB of her SSD, so the 4 TB SSD is a no brainer.

What I'm undecided about is 32 vs 64 GB of memory and whether the M1 Max is worth it over the M1 Pro. Obviously, I'll have to get the M1 Max if 64 GB of memory is necessary.

She uses an external monitor for heavy Photoshop editing and uses Lightroom extensively in her photography interest.

Any thoughts of whether the upgrade to M1 Max/64 GB is worth it in her use situation?

I'm using LR and occasionally Photoshop on the 16GB / 1TB model with a BenQ 27". Runs totally fine though it does eat into the swap a bit. I turned off hardware acceleration which drops swap use and it still runs pretty fast. My feeling is that the LR will probably eat whatever Ram is available. 64GB feels like it might be excessive; 32GB is probably a good idea. For what my budget allowed for, I'm not regretting my purchase.
