I would like to have all of my music and picutres available to me on my 64 GB iPad but I can no longer keep these growing libraries of music and pictures on the hard drive of my MacBook Air because I've run out of space.

External HardDrives are an option, but will it allow me to sync and keep the current data on my iPad along with future music and pictures?

Are there any other alternatives that are much more ideal for this situation?

A larger SSD, like the RunCore 128GB drive, is an alternative... albeit an expensive one. Not only will you get more capacity but you will also have a much faster SSD for your system.

Having your files on an external drive is an option, but not an ideal one. You would have to start iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to the iTunes Library on the external device. A big PITA.
