iOS Running personal iPhone application without a developer account

I was wondering if I could create my own personal iPhone application and install it on my iPhone without paying for an iPhone developer account. This is an application that I'm wanting to create for my wife and I and have no plans putting it in the App Store or selling it. I know that this is possible by jail breaking it, but I don't want to go that route.

I don't have an iPhone yet, but am planning to get one in the summer. I wanted to start developing the application now, but figured it would be a waste of time if I had to pay $99 to use it.

Nope, you have to pay the $99 to put your app on any device (including your own) the Apple way. You can however, as you stated, go the jailbreak route.

Did you not read the large text there? 'Using XCode with Pwned iPhone' That is the jailbreak route.

Ha... oops. When I clicked on the link from Google, it was scrolled down past the header and I didn't see it. Oh well... I'll probably end up getting a developer account anyways.

No problem. You might as well put the app on the store. Even if you think no one else will want it, the odds of 358 people (out of the 20 million possible devices) downloading the app are good. That's all you need to make $250 and get the payment from Apple, which would then cover your $99 fee.

Given that all the good, commercial quality, art work designers I know charge around $50 to $150 per hour, I'm not about to get any icons made for my one-off private-use apps (of which I have several on my iPhone). But blank white icons work just fine for just me.

Documentation, ad copy, and support web site page design can also cost, but I try to do some of that myself.

Actually, a blank icon might stand out better! Remember The Beatles' White Album? (of course, The Beatles aren't on iTunes!

Seriously, there are a lot of ways/places to get/make an icon. That shouldn't be an obstacle. Find a college kid who wants to build their portfolio. Use clip art. Or just type the app name in a decent font using GIMP. Or just use that avatar picture you have to the left of your post!
