Breaking off of another thread so I don't Hijack it -

I am really interested in getting some clarification on running single procs on my Dual proc 5,1. Is it possible to do?

I would really love to put in a X5680, 1 at a time.

If you read a bunch of reports on this you will find that 30-45 seconds after boot the fans will all ramp up to 100%.

Not really livable.

Do you perchance have any links to reports by people who have done a single CPU upgrade to the dual board? X5680 processor prices seem to be all over the map ... but none of them inexpensive ($850 is the lowest I have found from a reputable source), so buying 2 at once is a big upgrade to handle all at one time. I recall reading a few posts regarding this, but I don't seem to be able to find them again now. I eventually would like to upgrade my machine to dual X5680s, but if it is possible to do it in steps I would like to at least consider that option.

Thanks, :)

BTW: I find your posts on Mac Pro video card upgrades very informative and interesting ... thanks!
