Running Vista on MBA - heating issues

Hi,
I run MAC OS 10.5 very nicely on my MBA, but when I use Vista it is nearly impossible to run videos. The laptop runs so hot it feels like it will melt. The problem is that all my classes are online and we use One Note to share notes. Watching lectures becomes a big hassle. Does any one know how to cool the processors while running Windows. I have tried to install a Windows based program but it cannot run the Apple fans, just show the temp. It gets pretty hot.
I am very disappointed with the MBA's ability to run Windows. It's killing me. Help!

why vista?

it may behove you to use XP with office 2007.

Also you have the option to turn off all of the special visual effects vista comes with.

Either way your legs are in more danger than the notebook

I tried XP, it was the same issue. Nothing changed. I tried Parallels and VMWare fusion but running Windows inside those two was nearly impossible. They worked so slow that it felt like my life was running in slow motion.

You should try coolbook, could see temp drops anywhere from 5-10 celcius. I did.

You run Coolbook with Windows?? I just got Coolbook this morning so I have not had a chance to use it yet, but I thought you could run Coolbook only in MAC.

ouch, a bit fast there. Unfortunately no, Coolbook is mac only.

For windows, try speedfan and Zefyr laptop cooler

Speedfan - tried that. It cannot change the speed of fans, just monitor it.

Zefyr - sounds like a great idea, but I bought the Air so that I could reduce the amount of junk I carry around. It's bad enough I carry a CD drive and an external mouse around.

What kind of videos are those?

I have no problem playing 1080p videos in Win XP.
You need to have the codecs properly installed though.

If you want to do it in Vista, try switching off the Aero interface and all other visual candy.

Our classes are all videotaped and put up on the internet as wmv files. I like to use Windows because I can stream them via Media Player and most times I run them at double speed to save time. This takes a lot of resources. Toward the exam, I watch the videos for hours and hours. It's not uncommon for me to study for 12-15 hours at a time.

In MAC, you have to download the videos first, which is a real pain in the ass. Once downloaded, Quickplayer does a crappy job at playing videos at twice the speed. There is a splitting of the audio, like and echoe, which makes it a royal pain to listen to. I called Apple and they said they have no idea what I am talking about, however I did a little web search and found that many other people are experiencing the same thing.

A group of us in class are also using One note and we synchronize our notes. This way we split the load of note taking between us. So, because of this I have to use Windows.

I wish Office 2008 had put One note in like they said they would.

I believe VLC player lets you stream .wmv files too. It runs in Windows and Mac.

I tried that as well. The problem is that it does not let me play the videos at twice the speed.
The only solution seems to find a software like Coolbook that will work with Windows

Vista has always run hardware harder then it had to. The memory used just by vista can easily be over 1 GB (you only have 2). ALOT of processes are being run then needs be. (the Air was not meant for HIGH multitasking) Its better to just get XP since XP is more stable and just as good.

Yes I agree XP is the way to go. I am running XP SP 3 performance edition, a stripped version that takes only 250MB on a cd. It's flying on my MBA.

Make sure though that you have the latest Intel drivers for video. The driver supplied by Apple is outdated and buggy.

I found Parallels ran slowly until I discovered that once XP is installed you've got to run the Tools package. When run in coherence mode, wow it's pretty good.

I think I found a solution.
A buddy of mine that is an IT tech helped me lower the processor resources down to 90% and now the laptop runs at around 70 degrees while running heavy videos. It has not frozen yet.

What would be a normal range of temperatures for an MBA??
