When I first ran MAMP MySQL was not running. So, I went into ports, clicked set to default, quit and ran it again.

Now both MySQL and Apache are green. I placed the wordpress folder in the htdocs folder.

When I run in the browser I get "Error establishing a database connection"

You might want to first try connecting to the MySQL DB from Terminal to see if you're able to get connected that way to help determine where the issue is. I'm not at my Mac so can't see what the full path to the MySQL binary is, but it's within the MAMP folder somewhere.
