My Mac Pro 2010 kept shut downed by itself and I was trying to figure about this issue. I thought CPUs were overheating which cause this issue but today I assumed RX 480 might be the issue.

Any solutions tho? I was thinking to look for Dual 6 pin to 6 pin cable but couldn't find any.

For RX480, possible not the 6pin drawing too much, but the card drawing too much from the slot.

AFAIK, it can draw more than 75W from the slot, and so far I've never seen anyone know the shut down protection limit about the slot. (For your info, the mini 6pin shut down limit is about 120W, I don't think the RX480 will draw that much from the 6pin).

On the Windows side, this issue was fixed by driver update. That means this issue highly likely still exist in macOS.

Anyway, what's your CPU temperature? Why you suspect that's was an issue? Also, did you check the north bridge temperature? Last but not least, is there any specific factor that related to the cMP shutdown? e.g. Only happened when GPU under stress.

yeah only if I play games. I already tested few things. CPUs were totally overheating but they had no issues even I turned on for 12 hours. While I was playing games, I increased fans speed for cooling CPUs but Mac Pro shut downed by itself. So I suspected that RX 480 might be the cause.

So, you mean that you've already run the CPU stress test, they are overheating (what's the temperature anyway?) but didn't shut down. However, once you play games, the cMP shut itself down?

You play games in macOS?

yeah. Temps were around 60~70 without fans

70c is no problem for a Mac Pro 5.1

Hard to know what to blame without seeing the data. Install some monitoring software so you can see how many watts the GPU is pulling from the slot and socket.

I had until now no problems with my RX480 plus the HD5770, while rendering in FCPX or gaming.
I have the normal Sapphire with no OC and one fan.

I had this issue too. My 4.1 MP (flashed to 5.1) shut down automatically when I play WoW. Not always, but often and more often under rendering-stress. I have the XFX RX480 reference card installed and the 'shut-down-issue' comes definitely from the RX480. I think it is a heat problem or the card consumes to much power. Before upgrading to the RX480 I had the Geforce 680 Mac edition installed with absolutely no issues over time.

One question, did you remove the backplate from your RX480 Sapphire card?

The RX480 is a nice card but with this issue no option. So be careful when you think to upgrade.

No, I have left the backplate on it. I remember, that somebody posted that the XFX version is to blame for problems.
The Sapphire version runs without any problems. Yesterday, I did some heavy rendering in FCPX.

Thank you. Could you please tell me which Sapphire card do you have installed? I think I will change my XFX card and I will make no more mistakes.

@mavericks7913: To proof and for the rest of us: Do you have a XFX card installed also?
