Hello,

Just bought a Sapphire RX 580 nitro+ 8gb so I can upgrade to Mojave. So far the GPU is working fine in HS. It's registered and seems to be working probably.

However when I try to restart my MAC and hold the "option" button when the "beep" sounds occur nothing happens on the display. I don't get the chance to boot from my Mojave USB installer :(

It's just black screen...

I just got the impression that it's possible to do that from my previous thread:

Help!

RX 580 don’t have boot screens, it’s not a Mac EFI GPU.

To do a clean install, do it from macOS, selecting another disk. Another way is to remove all other disks from the Mac Pro, then you put just the createinstallmedia USB key and the empty drive - Mac Pro will boot from the createinstallmedia USB installer.

It can take quite some time, when booting/installing from USB, for anything to appear. This is very dependant on the speed of your USB disk/port. I recently purchased some USB 3 sticks and the boot up process is much improved, compared to my older USB sticks.

As a point of reference it took almost 3:00 minutes, after the chime sounded, before I saw anything happen on my screen with my USB 3 sticks.

Yes I know that. Guess I just thought it would be possible to boot from the USB without removing my HS drive for some reason...

Both methods are working so everything seems to be fine. Lucky for me I got two SSD's with one them them not really being used. That USB 2.0 install is SOOOO slow. Guess it will be SSD to SSD then :)

Yep! I was so close to shutting it down but an image appeared and everything seems to be okay.

USB 3.0 sticks are faster but still only USB 2.0 port on the MAC since my NanoTech 3.0 PCI board isn't working for boot-up sadly :(

You can upgrade your Mac Pro in almost every way, but you can't boot from USB3.0 cards. A limitation that the more than ten years of the project can't overcome.

Just made that point above :)

I guess you mean DVD is also an option?

But don't you agree that SSD to SSD is by far the most optimal way if One has the opportunity to do so? I mean DVD and USB 2.0 are pretty slow...

DVD is slower than a fast USB2.0 key. The fastest way is from macOS to an empty disk.

Yup!

Any idea why Mojave doesn't recognizes my computer as a "Mac Pro 2012" but just "Mac Pro" ???

Apple uses a query with a remote server to determine the year model, based on the serial number. Usually when you do a re-install and don't have internet connection, stays as Mac Pro. After the query is done, with internet connection, changes to the year model.

I never had problems with this before having normal internet connection.

Makes totally sense and specially when I on purpose didn't connect the wifi :)

Excuse me for asking a couple of extra questions but I really appreciate your knowledge!

Do you know anything about the buzzing sound from the PSU from time to time. I have noticed it a lot when scrolling with my mouse e.g on the internet and haven't been able to find any real information on it...

Is it normal and something all cheese grater users have to accept or is it a sign of the PSU becoming defect ???

Check if your power outlet is correctly installed. This buzz is more common when the neutral and phase are inverted. If it's correct, could be a sign that your power supply is dying. BTW, it's not normal and you shouldn't have it.

I will for sure check that later...

Would just surprise me a lot since I bought the computer almost from new 1,5 years ago and really haven't used it a lot myself...

Anyone on this forum who have installed a new PSU with succes ???

Well I replaced my PSU, but it was used .

It's just 4 Allen screws that fix the PSU, 5 minutes job.

Not so much the unmounting proces I'm concerned about. You can't just plug any PSU into the Mac that has the same amount of Watt I'm guessing :)

Why did you replace it? Did you use a completely different brand or did you get a PSU from another cheese grater?
