I have an AMD Sapphire RX 590 Special Ed. working great in slot 1 of my cMP 5,1, but visually the height clearly shows that even a small NVME adapter card in slot 2 (to use 16x) would touch the fan blades. Has anyone made this work?

Someone in this thread mentions success with about one mm of space between their RX 580 and a slot 2 SSD card, but not sure if my 590 is thicker, I've searched for specs that might hint at a difference.

Same thread also mentions getting an add'l mm or two of space by shifting the CPU cage down, or logic board up, or both, but need better instructions.

Even curious about rigging a PCIe extension cable in my blocked 16x slot, then MacGyver a custom mounting scheme.

Thanks for any help!

That's a PLUSE RX580, not Nitro+.

You Nitro+ is 3mm higher than that PLUSE. By considering a PCIe slot is just 20mm thick. Infringe that by 3mm means 15% already. IMO, way too much to insert another card.

Anyway, most low cost NVMe adaptor only has 4 lane (or even less). Do you really need to install that into slot 2? Which PCIe card you are using?

Thanks for that helpful clarification.
I was misled by a couple of videos before finally discovering the definitive mac pro update guide which emphasizes what you just did (thanks!). So I'll give up on that remaining 16x slot. I just ordered this adapter along with a SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 500GB NVMe M.2. I should be good considering it'll still be about 3x the speed I'm getting from my Crucial SSD I'm running from PCIe. :)

That's just a x4 adaptor. Same performance in any slot on the cMP. So, no reason to use slot 2 in this case.

Depends on your usage. For most normal daily usage, most likely you can't feel any difference.

But for large files copying, sure you can enjoy the 3x faster speed.

Thank you.

If I sought a better card, have you ever heard of someone successfully running a 16x extension cable from slot 2 in order to run a 16x NVMe card? Assuming there's just enough room to accommodate the male end of the extension, and I can achieve a mod to mount the card, shouldn't that be do-able?

PCIe extension cable should work.

Which x16 card you are targeting to buy now?

Not exactly...I basically gave up on the idea and settled for slower NVMe speed. The margins were too tight to continue to experiment with keeping the card inside the case, and I wasn't willing to proceed with having the card outside of the case, which is probably the more realistic method and has been done by others.
