Bought a second hand 27 i7 2011, can turn it on and log in using the previous owners login, but I tried a CMD R to reset to factory and start fresh and the last owner has set a firmware password, contacted him and he doesn't remember even setting it, he bought it second hand so has no original proof of purchase to get Apple to reset it, is there anything I can do or should I just get my money back off him and say good riddance ?

if it still has the original HDD, swap that out with a new SSD. First you'll have to format the new SSD, but after that you should be able to do a internet recovery and be good as new for a 2011, just faster.

How does that unlock the firmware password ?

Sorry I didn't read it correctly, its early here. Have the individual you purchased it from make you an invoice, you can find generic templates online. That should hopefully be proof enough. If not, maybe they could bypass the proof of purchase due to how old the machine is. You can always find the purchase date online if they ask.

Yeah that wont work, I already spoke to Apple and they want proof of purchase for the day it was bought from Apple.

Luckily he remembered his password, so i have removed that, now it wont let me reinstall sierra, every time i click continue it pops up a screen saying it will need to check with Apple, and when i click continue it just goes back to the previous continue page lol

I had this problem and I believe I just erased and reformatted the hard drive and it eventually went all the way through.
