I notice typically the note series have better battery life - also seems to have better hardware + stylus.

The S4 with 2600mAh battery and efficient new hardware, should get very good battery life. Not Note 2 good, but I'd say second best next to the Note 2.

The Note 3 will have slightly better hardware, just because it's released 6 months later then the S4, so newer updated hardware is ready. But that thing will be a beast, supposedly a screen size of around 5.9" to 6.3". Sorry that is too large for my tastes for a handheld phone. The S4 @ 5" is as big as I care to go.

I heard the note 3 will be announced in the second quarter so isn't it worth the wait?

I know that's speculation but I'm assuming its samsungs sales strategy to take away from apples sales.

That's been a Q4 US launch on both Note models to date....so I wouldn't anticipate seeing a Note 3 before this fall.

Note 1 was released in September 2011, and Note 2 in October 2012. I think those are fairly accurate. I would guess the Note III is a Sept / Oct release, no earlier. With an announcement, maybe in August.

Depends on what phone you currently have. I have the Note II so I'll be waiting for the Note III. Based on the S4, I think Samsung will do a good job increasing the screen size but not make the phone significantly larger. If they do, Nexus 5 and S5 will be next up on my list.

I'm about to have a relative take over my iP4S + remaining carrier plan so I can get a new plan with a Note 2. This would be perfect timing to get the S4, but I want that extra screen real estate and the S-pen is massively useful for me.

Also I could wait for the Note 3 but....I just can't wait that long, I need my Note fix right away :p And when the Note 3 comes I'll just sell this one and pay the difference to get the new one.

I have an upgrade coming next month and in June. My family members don't care about phones so much so they let me have their upgrades if I want it.

The note 2 looks nice but I feel the note 3 might be worth the wait.

The note 3, with the exception of size, battery life (because of size) and the stylus, will be almost identical spec wise to the S4.

That's the same dilemma I face without clearcut answer so far.
Maybe Nexus 5 or Xphone will ease decision or long wait

There's always something faster/bigger/better around the corner. Keep waiting for what's coming and you'll never actually enjoy what's available now. The S4 is a month away, the Note 3 six months from now, the S5 in another six months, plus whatever any other manufacturer releases in between.

Determine want you want/need in a smartphone and find the best device available to match. Worrying about missing out on the next available device will just drive you nuts.

I have the exact opposite problem--I want to try every device that comes out. Thankfully, there are plenty of people on the secondary market looking for the same devices so I usually recoup much or even all of my expense.

Both. Get the S4 and upgrade in November when the Note 3 comes out. AT&T has been granting me early upgrades every 6 months recently.

Thats what I plan to do :)

Whats the catch? Why would they let you do that?

No catch. Just gotta extend your contract for the 2 years. Very similar to how AT&T grants upgrades to iPhone users every year.

I've been with AT&T for over 10 years. All I have to do is call and nicely ask about wanting to upgrade my phone and they oblige. It also helps if you say you want to upgrade more than one line.

Extending the contract is no issue for me. I'll be with AT&T. They are fantastic in my area.

Been with TMobile for 8 years and they wont let me upgrade like that. Now i can because i have their value plan. I had been keeping my phones nearly teh whole two eyars but this time since i can, ill be getting an upgrade after a year which will be in July. I think a year is good. Two is too long.
