I have a couple IDE hard drives from an old windows pc from back in the day. I would like to see what's on them and maybe extract any files or pics.

I found this device on Amazon that sounds like it may do what I need...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0758RP5V...olid=3GC45M35Z5SQC&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

...the system requirements list Mac OS, so i'm slightly optimistic.

My system...21.5-inch iMac, Late 2012 running macOS High Sierra 10.13.5

Have any of you used this device, or maybe something like this device with any kind of success?

Any input, comments, suggestions, ideas, or advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Not used this specific device, but similar ones and they have worked fine for exactly the purpose you're describing

Thank you very much for the reply, I appreciate it!

That is good to know and makes me feel better about using one with the iMac.

OP:

That should do what you need.

But...
... be sure to use the additional "power cable" when connecting to the Mac.
The Mac doesn't supply enough "bus power" to power up and run older 3.5" drives.

Thank you for the reply sir, I appreciate it!...and thank you for the tip on using the power supply.

I was just nervous about it working on a Mac.

Have used similar from same company, just an older model (USB 2, different cabling). Works like a charm on Mac for exact purpose in OP. And also use this for wiping/erasing the drives before sending to e-recycling.

Sabrent stuff works very well with Mac OS. I have Cables, USB hubs and SSD - HD converter sleds, never had an issue with any of them.

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it!

You pushed me off the fence!...I just ordered it.

I’ll post once I get it hooked up and try it out.
Stay tuned...

I received the Sabrent kit yesterday and tried it out last night on a WD drive I had from an old windows pc...as soon as I turned on the adapter, the drive spun up and my iMac recognized it immediately!
It was great, there was some old pictures on that drive that are now safely on my Mac!

I have another drive that I tried to access, a Maxtor, but it wasn’t happening. I think that one needs professional attention, it was making odd sounds. I even brought it to work today to see if it would maybe like a windows computer better, nope...same sound and actually changed to a clicking.
[doublepost=1530288291][/doublepost]This is the kit that I purchased from amazon...

...the best $28.98 (with shipping) I've ever spent!
[doublepost=1530288393][/doublepost]Thanks again to everyone that posted in this thread! I appreciate all your help!

I have this same kit and it will not work with a Maxtor drives that I have been trying to access, works with others but not Maxtor

The "clicking" may be due to hardware failure inside.
This might be one of those times that "putting the drive into the freezer" (in a ziploc bag) might help. Leave it there overnight.
Then, take it out (cold) and immediately connect to the Mac to see if it will spin up.
If it does, get whatever you can from it, pronto.

Then again, if that doesn't work, and if there's nothing on it that you absolutely have-to-have, might be better to just "let it go"...

I had another old (Dell) pc under my workbench that I took the hard drives out of this morning and one of the drives is a Maxtor. I hooked it up to the Sabrent adapter, turned it on...it spun right up and was instantly recognized.
I removed all the pics from it and saved them to my desktop!
Maybe your Maxtor has internal damage like my other one does?
