I just bought a refurb iPod 2G and when I connect it to a computer, a sad iPod icon shows up. I know that this means the iPod OS is frazzed, and I know what I'm gonna have to do to solve it (I hope), but are there any ideas out there that could help me? I'm sure I'm lost on part of it.

Sorry, pal! :(
If you just bought it get on the phone, send it back, and ask for something for all your trouble!
(My story: Apple's courier lost my shuffle 1GB in the post, for the delay I got a free set of in-ear phones - nice :))

You kind of lost me here. If you already know what to do to solve it, did you try it, and did it work?

Two things to try before concluding that the poor 'pod is toast:

1) Hard reset -- plug it into the power brick, let it charge fully (if it seems to be charging), and then toggle menu switch on/off and then hold both the menu and the play/pause buttons down at the same time until it resets.

2) Does the iPod work in the firmware updated? Download it from Apple, run it, and then plug in the iPod. If the firmware updater allows you to, then choose the option which reformats the iPod and re-writes the basic info to the HD. You will have to re-sync all songs, but sounds like you never got far enough to get them on in the first place, so should be zero harm.

Sad iPod icon

Heh, at first look at the title I thought you thought you the iPod's desktop icon was sad, as in not well designed or something.

Does the iPod itself turn on at all? If so, what does it display?

iPod turns on. When connected to just a power brick, it shows the apple and then the folder with the magnifying glass. When connected to a computer, shows apple, magnifying glass, CD with magnifying glass, and then sad iPod.

Edit: Yea, it seems that the iPod's HD is fried. I'm gonna need to go to the warehouse where I bought it today and exchange it. I wish I could do something about it. Again, if anyone has any ideas...
