Hi,

My ibook has been experiencing a kernel panic. The computer does work even though it takes several attempts to turn it on, and the fact that I can't use the wireless connection anymore.

The ideal computer to take the place of my ibook would be a smaller and more powerful 11" MBA. This computer would allow me to travel light, and at the same time to connect it to a largeer screen in case I may need to to do it. The problem is, that this computer is not on the market yet. Speculation and rumors say it that MBAs with sandy bridge processors may hit the market as early as October 2011 and as late as February 2012!

My day to day needs are:
*Watching educational videos from the internet, (homework). They are on youtube as well as on other websites.
*Watching Tv using Eye Tv - I am learning a language and this helps
*Watching a movie once or twice a week, (school & non-school).
*Writing word documents, e-mails, in the forums I consult. I am starting to blog too.

My day to day needs but that I can't use the MBA 11" are:
*Learning Photoshop, and
*learning Autocad, sistem requirements a 2.1 GHz processor

I am picking the computer up in a store before Monday at midday. This means, if it is even a MBA 13", I won't be able to start doing autocad because the requirement is 2.1 GHz. (At the moment, they don't have 2.1 GHz at the store). Will I be able to start learning autocad if the sistem requirements are a tad less ?? At the store, at the moment, one can't add extra RAM.

I have also thought on getting a 13" MBP, that at this moment may be more powerful than the MBAs. Perhaps is a better idea to buy a 13" MBP now, and then resell it when the MBAs are updated. This may be foolish, as I don't know how much value will a MBP lose in six to nine months.

Your thoughts and ideas are very welcome, thank you in advance, kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

Not sure about the AutoCAD, but the 11" air should be able to handle everything else fine, including photoshop for the most part... Other than the portability factor, a MBP would probably suit your needs much better.

For your needs, I think that an 11in MBA is sufficient. The current versions of Photoshop and Autocad are not significantly slower than those of five years ago, and I think that they run just fine back then, on much slower computers.

If you are a professional, working with very large projects daily, I would be more hesitant. But for learning Photoshop, and for doing normal image retouching, web-design etc., you will be fine. The same applies to Autocad: ordinary projects will be ok. Bigger machines will render faster, and they maybe better suited for really large projects, but for a beginner, you should not need to worry.

I am running my 11in MBA at a 30in screen in the office, and it does Photoshop pretty much the same as my 2009 MBP.

The weight and compactness of my MBA make me happy every time I use it. The one thing that it is too slow for is serious gaming. I just bought another one for the family.

Hi,

My heart is with the 11" MBA!

I think that if I happen to decide for the 11", I could go on and try it. If after a couple of months it doesn't feel right for me, I could resell it. I just wonder, for how much less I could resell it within six ??

Thank you again, kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

OP - You will enjoy the 13" screen over the 11" ... for what you've described you're doing do not go smaller than a 13".

For your needs, (Autocad), you will be better served by the more powerful 13" MBP ... the Air would handle your tasks for sure, and I think you'd enjoy using the Air more than a MBP ... I'd bet on that ... but it may not be as fast at doing some things.... still personally I'd choose the Air again because its fun to use anywhere and imo very fast and capable.

Good luck with your purchase!

"Sadly, I am not getting the 11" MBA, but the 13"

Why sad? Just buy the 11" if you want it.

now that I just got a 13" MBP, I regret I didn't get a 11" MBA ultimate instead of 13" MBA.

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to thank you for all your very valuable help : ) !!!

You may want to throw something at me because the computer
I got is a 13" MBP, and not a MBA. It was a tough choice, and
even though I am quite happy with my MBP, I think I'll get an
11" MBA over the summer.

Very kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

You might consider in the future a 13" MBA and work from 'one machine' instead of having a 11" Air and a 13" Pro?

Enjoy your new machine!

I was so close of doing that !!!

However, I may surprise you getting in early September an 11" MBA and perhaps a 15" or 17" MBP. It just depends how things go with this one.

Very kind regards,

I always wanna do the same thing with you but money is my problem T_T. So I decided to go with 11". I have another PC in my office at work. I used mac air for my personal things only.

P.S. entatirg, I say both the 17" MBP and the MBA, because I like the combination you have!
Hi Paeza, unfortunately I am on my own. At the moment in my job there is not a computer, except for my boss's. Let's see if I can get enough cash. If not, I am also good ; ) !!!

Hi,

Yes, please tell us how you'll be using both !!!

I would use the bigger one for the work that needs much more "muscle", and I would use the other one for lighter tasks, and definitely for my short travels : ) !!!

kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

I personally think 11" MBA is the most beautiful Macintosh machine. If I am surfing, using iWork or office or a bit of photoshop and video editing, I would definitely buy it.

Not a bad idea either.
MBA 13" would have done well, but that way you might end up happier than the other way around.

Really? I find having two laptops to be confusing, and two airs have such similar specs it seems so redundant. When I got my air I had a 17-inch mac pro, and I thought that I'd use it when I wanted the real estate on the go. But I didn't use it so I gave it to another family member. If I needed a bigger screen I used my Mac Pro. Otherwise, if I was traveling (or at work) I wanted as small as I could.

It seems like there's a lot of overlap with two airs.

Hi,

I would use a MBP and an 11" MBA if the opportunity and my budget allows for both.

Very kind regards,

igmolinav
