I have Safari v14 installed under Catalina 10.15.6 with all the latest Supplemental updates. I have Safari set so that when I launch it to show the Start Page, not the Home Page. I noticed that with Safari only showing the Start Page, not browsing to any websites and not having any extensions installed, under battery it shows Safari Using Significant Energy. I have looked at the preference settings and even looked at the Develop preferences in Safari. Nothing seems to get rid of it. Anyone else seeing this?

I have reported this to Apple Feedback for Safari.

This seems to be an intermittent situation. I browsed to this website and Using Significant Energy went away. It came back again when I opened a new tab which only had Start Page in it. I close the Start Page tab and it is now showing Using Significant Energy again. And now it just stopped again. Very strange behavior.

Apple should realize that people use laptops or MacBook primarily for internet browsing. I saw many posts saying that wi-fi and browsing causes faster battery drain in MacBook. Does that mean I should use other laptops for work and MacBook only for watching movies and all? When will Apple fix this issue with Safari and Wi-Fi which eats battery like a demon?

It is a short-sighted thinking from the technology giant!

The new Safari update is the worst so far. Draining too much energy, lagging. What did Apple think when they were about to release it??

So it is an issue with Start Page, not Safari in general, and not intermittent, yes? Have you tried switching Frequently Visited items to Icons (just right-click on them)? It sounds like a thumbnail refresh is hanging. - edit: after a closer read, I see it also happens when you close Start Page; there's probably a burst of iCloud syncing also hanging that still suggests to be content-specific.

It's never a surprise when Apple apps that bundle things together and sync them haven't been designed to recognize when real-world content disagrees with their code.
