Hello to all,
I hope this is the right section.
I would like to know if Safari can play HD AND HDR videos from Prime Video. I have a MBP 16’’ and a HDR capable tv (but not 4K).
I know that on Big Sur Safari can handle HDR on Netflix, but I can’t find a definitive answer for Prime Video and Catalina.
thanks

Do you need a 4K TV for HDR?

HDR and Ultra HD '4K' TVs
Right now the only TVs with HDR capabilities are Ultra HD "4K" TVs. So the narrowest of answers to the question posed by the article is yes, you need 4K TV to get HDR.

If you do not have a 4K TV, your TV is not HDR capable. They never made 1080P/720p TV's with HDR (although they could if they wanted to).

It would seem you will get HD at the very least.

Dear SketchyClown, thank you for your input.
However, I have to admit that I'm pretty confident about my tv having HDR capabilities. Here is the model: https://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-32LK6100PLB. (technical specs are at the bottom of the page)

At least, it should have some basic form of HDR. When I connect my MBP through the official dongle, I can see a badge appearing for few seconds on the TV signaling that a HDR input has been connected.
What I can't really understand is: for Amazon Prime, is 4K compulsory for HDR? is HDR barred from streaming with browsers?

On Big Sur, HDR on Netflix is being addressed. And the TV app, according to this webpage (https://support.apple.com/it-it/HT210980), should output HDR video at 1080p.

Thanks

Thanks

Not looking to bash your TV.

When you search for "Active HDR" it seems it is a form of "fake HDR" that is used as a marketing tool by LG.

Active HDR is LG's algorithm that it uses on their TVs to generate dynamic metadata for HDR10 on the fly. It's not an HDR format, but rather it can be used on any HDR10 content by setting Dynamic Contrast to Low. This would be useful for TVs with sub-optimal peak brightness.

It still doesn't really answer your question about Safari or Amazon.

I guess we will have to see what we get with Big Sur when we get it.

I'd hope with YouTube now in for 4K HDR that we will have cohesion across all these well established apps.

Ah, I was missing the real meaning of Active HDR.
Thank you for the clarifications!
Take care
