Safari and online Banking problem

Ok here is the problem, my girlfriend asked me how to set up online banking on her ibook (OS 10.2.3). So I tried to get it going using Safari but was unsuccessful. Fearing that I have to tell her she now has to use IE again I try setting it up from there. Still, no go in IE, so I called the bank hotline and spoke with the online banking department. Of course they were all pissed off since I was on a Mac and didn't really know what to tell me. Finally they came to the conclusion that I can only get connected to their online banking on a mac using netscape.:(

I really don't want to have to download that stupid 20 meg Netscape file. If it doesn't work in Safari I can deal with that. But really, you would think it would work in IE.

Is there any way around this ?

Has anyone setup online banking using Safari?
 
Download Safari Enhancer or Safari Toolkit (search versiontracker) and use the Debug menu to spoof the user agent string...layman's terms, you can pretend that Safari is really IE 6 for PC. Theoretically, Safari can automatically 'guess' what a website wants to hear, but it's not working out too well, so lots of people are having to manually override it this way.

What problems are you seeing exactly? I know that for my online bank I got a blank page on my account detail page, which the second beta of Safari seems to have fixed. When I tried to pay my credit card bill online, though, I actually got a message saying "our website is only compatible with Internet Explorer". What are you getting exactly? A page rendering problem or an error message? Try downloading Chimera 0.6, it's a great Netscape-based browser. Though it's still in beta like Safari, it seems to be much more stable and have fewer page-rendering problems.

WOW thanks for the quick reply Goblin2099. I'll give that a try tomorrow when I get a hold of her ibook.

I'm new to Macrumors and even newer to the whole macos platform. I have been using PC's my whole life and am ready to switch as soon as I have enough money for a G4 tower, hopefully aroud when the 970's come out.

since i got my girlfriend to get an ibook for her new computer instead of a PC we have both loved it and have had no where near the problems we have always had with our PC's. Since im still used to a windows world only using my girlfriends ibooks a few hours a week I find myslef with alot of questions about OSX. After seeing how fast of a replay I got to this question im am realizing how helpful mac users are to each other, and that macrumors is a great place for switchers with questions:) THANKS!
 
The problem is definitely not with Safari, it is with the banks html, and probably javascript. Safari is actually better with my bank than IE ever was. Personally, I would threaten to switch banks if they do not fix the problem.
 
My bank only accepts netscape 4.7 on mac. That means I have to use classic to do banking. When I talk to the bank they're just telling me "we currently only support Mac OS 9." Do you think it's possible to just use some kind of app to change to browser ID? How would I do this with chimera or netscape?
 
My online banking has been improved by Safari. Although, it is just little stuff, like the cursor not being put in a editable field box (username for logging in) when a page is loaded, it makes me feel like I'm not a freak for using a Mac.

Way before Safari showed up, I had to talk with my bank about certain issues they were having. One was allowing four letter domain names for email addresses. It used to only allow three (for .com, .net, .org). New domain names could not be used becauase they had four letters ( .name, .info).

At first they were adamant about not supporting the Mac platform because I used a Mac and I had a .info email address.

I set them straight.

To change the browser ID for Chimera, you have to add a line to your preferences file....check out http://www.efritz.net/chimeratricks.html for instructions on that and lots of other great tricks for Chimera.
Not sure if you can get Netscape to report itself as an earlier version...
 
I tried changing the browser id/user string on both chimera and safari, but it didn't work. All the browsers have problems downloading the sertificate.

Safari downloads it as a normal file, and Chimera doesn't do anything when I click the link.

Oh well, I guess I'll just switch to windows...:rolleyes:
 
I don't believe the Browser ID would affect this problem, but after clicking login at my bank, it puts up a screen saying that it is accessing my account information and then downloads a .dll file to the desktop. I guess that's why it only works right in IE and Mozilla.

Well basically after putting in my user id and password, Safari attempts to load the page but fails and says "session timed out"

I'm going to try that toolkit thing now

One last thing to try, you could try turning off the popup window blocking, I've heard this can potentially cause problems with some Javascript, in Hotmail in particular.

there are MAJOR SSL issues in build51 and earlier versions of Safari - build57 is supposed to sort them out (due any day now).

Tabbed browsing would be a nice enhancement too.
