2010 refresh refurb 27" i3 imac 4gb ram.

Watching istat and activity monitor. When I first fire up I notice i have around 3.4 3.4gb ram free. When I first start Safari I notice it takes up around 80mb. After a while, no matter if I have 1 tab or 10, it climbs to 600 to 800mb. Is this normal?

Yep. Safari is known to be a huge RAM hog. But then again, I think most of the big browsers behave similarly. I get around it by just quitting Safari every once in a while. Doesn't take much time, and gets the job done.

It is normal. When you close a tab, the RAM it used is not freed so eventually it will take hundreds of MBs. Chrome does a bit better job as each tab is its own process

Firefox was just as bad on my PC. Is there a tab restore option if I shut down?

Interesting. Hate google so no chrome for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I have safari getting up to 4gb of ram usage by itself. It's pretty grand.
