No but it's working on Apple TV & iOS (Youtube App) so I expect Safari might follow soon?

4k, 8k video playback and extension support are 2 reasons why chrome is still my go-to browser. 8k youtube videos play buttery smooth on my 7-year-old pc running i7-4770k and rtx 2080 ti w/ my symmetrical 1.5gbps internet. I rarely use google search anymore. Duckduckgo ftw. I think safari is getting there but not quite there yet for me to replace chrome.

I think they might start supporting 4K using AV1 codec instead of VP9 (like on tvOS?). But could not find any AV1 video that would play as 4K in Safari on Big Sur. Let me know if you find some. I’m working on an extension that detects 4K in Safari (“4Ktube”). Once Safari can play some 4K videos, I plan to update the extension to warn only about unsupported VP9 videos.

There is a play list of AV1 videos https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyqf6gJt7KuHBmeVzZteZUlNUQAVLwrZS

Also did you go to www.youtube.com/testtube to switch to AV1?

If they can support it on iOS/ tvOS, then they can support it in Safari. I really hope they do because lack of 4K YouTube is a major drag. For my use, there would be no need to have a separate browser.

Doesn't work in Safari... Only in Chrome. YouTube only encodes 4K videos with the VP9 codec but Safari/Apple Doesn't support VP9 as a codec, even if the hardware is capable.

I believe YouTube are now starting to encode 4K videos in AV1, which is an open source codec. This codec is supported by Apple. Who knows if/when YouTube will re-encode VP9 videos into AV1 videos.

There isn't a VP9 or AV1 decoder on macOS yet in the first beta. So no changes at the moment.

Yeah I'm running the iOS 14 beta

Oh I went to the same. video and it worked. I bet that video is working in AV1 and not VP9.
