I am seeing Safari freeze and delay searches from the address bar for several seconds.

This is occasional, but it happens on multiple computers with AS chips.

I don't think it is a connection issue or even a resources issue -- a separate tab with a different search may come up immediately.

But, certain searches just "sit there and think about it" with no apparent reason.

My searches go through google, by the way.

Anyone else seeing this "Brain Freeze" effect, or any ideas what is causing it?

Sounds more like a networking or DNS issue rather than a Safari issue. Turn on the "Developer" mode in Safari.. menu bar .. Safari > Settings > Advanced > Show Develop menu in menu bar. Now in menu bar select Develop > Show Web Inspector. Click "Network" tab and see what is actually taking up the time during the "Brain Freeze".

Very interesting suggestion. I've not played around with this interface before, but I've got it pulled up as you suggested. I'll see if I can catch it next time I have the issue. thanks!

I've seen this, and I thought it was an ISP issue at first, until I ran a Windows computer at the same time that found that sites that would freeze on my Mac would work fine on the Windows machine.

I subsequently found that switching to a different Location from the Apple menu, and optionally back again, would fix the issue immediately.

I hadn't seen any other reports of this problem until now, but it seems that it's not just me. I'm on an Intel machine with OS 12.6.8 and Safari 16.6, but it's been an intermittent issue since at least February.

Edit: There was this thread from March, which I actually posted in at the time.

OK -- I was able to catch it. Here's a screen cap of the web inspector. The main document fetch (top line of the log) was just sitting there spinning for 2 minutes until I reloaded the page and the request was handled instantly. It seems that other queries for page elements (second lines and following) were not even initiated until about 25 seconds had passed. At the time of this screen cap it had been 1.4 minutes of brain freeze.
