Clear history and website data. I've had in the past bloated Safari data, and clearing it makes things better. And this is why I have my history retention set to 30 days: just enough time to keep recent history, and not bloat it with data from a website I visited once.

I have issues with Safari on this model macbook pro as well (late retina 2013 13inch pro). It has 8GB of ram and 256gb hard drive and even after a clean install of El Capitan I still have issues with safari and unresponsiveness. I love that Safari is better on battery life, but unless I really need that extra half hour/45 minutes of battery life, I will be using either Chrome or Firefox. Both of them work very well.
