Safari downloads links to desktop

every once in a while safari will download a weblink to the desk top. IE. If i were to click on the mac rumors tab intstead of opening the mac rumors page it get a download on my desktop that has the safari icon and "mac rumors.html" the page does not load and if I keep clicking on different pages of a website it just keeps loading the link to the desk top..what gives.


i have to quit safari several times or worse restart to get it to stop.

So restarting Safari really helps?

Other causes might be as trivial as your option (aka alt) key that hangs a bit, either physically (less likely if restarting Safari helps) or in the system...

...or, if you use a scroll wheel mouse that you either inadvertadly click the scroll wheel when you click a link or that OS X believes you do because of some minor bug(s)...

Or one of countless other small problems...

Have you tried the usual mumbo jumbo™:

- log into another account (make one if you have to) and see it the problem occurs there...

- repair permissions, run periodicals, etc...

- ditch Safari's preference file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist

Also, you could give Firefox a try. I switched back to FF recently because I was just too fed up with Safari. Firefox 1.5 is really good...

Don't know, Dude, I use Firefox though have noticed Real Player doing a similar thing. I just thought it was Real being crap.

Yes, that's most likely because your browser treats real files as files and not pages (or objects that can be run by one of the internet plugins). It's in part Real's fault and in part bad webdesign/-programming that doesn't use correct code when inserting the media content...

I would trash it but there's nothing else I can tink of that'll play .rm(?) files.

I've never had any problems with Safari. It's quick, easy and tidy - what more could you want?

RealPlayer is a media player, not a browser. It does include a WebKit-based (ie. Safari-based) browser component, but you shouldn't be using that for regular browsing
