Safari EXTREMELY slow!

Hi! For some reason, Safari has been very very slow for me the last few days. I updated to the latest OS X yesterday but it doesn't seem to have helped. Even if I restart my 2011 MBP, and only run Safari, it's still slow.

I get the spinning ball (that can last 5 to 10 seconds) every time I click on a new tab, sometimes if I scroll too fast on a website, and pages in general take a lot longer to load.

Weird thing is that with other programmes which I'd assume are more intense, such as Photoshop and inDesign, they don't seem to freeze up. But safari does, and even iTunes a bit too.

Any recommendations? Thank you!

No advice other than either wait for an update or switch to FireFox or Chrome. Under both 10.11 and 10.11.1 Safari has been both slower and prone to crashes for me. When it crashes it locks up my Mac and I have to pull the plug (force quit doesn't work).

Thanks, I'm doing that now, and it helps. Just a shame, because I like Safari more haha.

No, because it's the actual application freezing. Wifi works just fine on my iPhone or other browsers.

Can you clarify what you updated? Did you move from say Yosemite to El Capitan? If so, there may be some extension or other utility conflicting with Safari.

Just as a test, hold the shift key to boot to safe mode. That will stop any third party startup or launch items from running. If that helps then you know you have a startup or launch item causing this. You might also try dialing all extensions in Safari just as a test.

Nope, I was already running El Capitan and Safari working without any trouble. It just started going slow out of the blue, and I don't think I installed any extensions or anything. I later updated to the latest version of El Capitan but it didn't seem to do anything to help.

If it was working fine all along then just started this without you installing anything, I would start thinking hardware issue. I just reread your post and see you mentioned iTunes is doing this also. A failing drive can cause symptoms like this. It is less common, but a bad drive cable can also cause this.

Same thing here, Safari slowed down recently on both my MacBook Air and 27" 5K iMac. OS is El Capitan, Safari just slowed down, unusable at times, refreshing as a page loads, seems to speed up the load. Have a 50meg internet, speediest look good, streams run fine, Safari only loaded half this page and was still working on it a minute later, until I refreshed, then it loaded fast.

Possibilities:

1. Too many tabs open
2. Bad web sites
3. Slow/glitchy bugs in the wireless

Too many tabs open can cause delays. Each tab will open its own web process and they're all eating up lots of memory, forcing you to swap/page out a lot. Try opening just one page at a time

Bad web sites: Our friends on Wall Street, who think products are irrelevant but advertising is, are now saturating some sites with dynamic ads. On some sites, they'll switch the ads, run video, etc. without letting any of the launched subprocesses complete. I saw this on one site and it literally, in a few minutes, ate up 4GB of memory. I thought it was Safari so I tried it with Chrome and Firefox and the exact same thing happened. There are some crappy, abusive websites out there and you just have to learn how to spot them and then avoid them. The signs are lots of dynamic content, ads that open and close and then get replaced with another ad, multiple videos playing at the same time, and pages that magically "resize" themselves because yet another ad has been displaced by one of a different size.

If you're using wireless, try a direct connection with ethernet and see if the problems go away. I know some people are still having the same types of wireless issues that occurred on Yosemite with El Capitan. I never use wireless because the direct connection is faster anyway.

Yes as i had same problem VERY slow.
I use iphone ipad ipad mini and 3 macs.. using icloud tabs in safari was 80% the culprit.. disconnect safari from iCloud
Second thing to do is to set 'new tab or browser page' to blank page instead of top hits ot bookmarks to show when opening a new tab
delete history every day
it made my safari work again, as it was taking up to 45 seconds to wake up.
I noticed problems begin with iCloud in the year Apple upgraded to iCloud drive, and left two iclouds online for those who hadnt switched yet.. somehow some of my iCloud data is double (e.g. text replacements from the old iCloud which was deleted, still renew themself despite not existing on any of my current devices.. showing its loading an old file which shouldnt exist anymore).
As a result, my text replacements keep changing themself and adding double entries, and if i connect Notes app to iCloud, then my whole computer slows down (i have about a GB of notes in there). Opening notes is like lifting a boulder and trying to drag it uphill

My point is.. switch off iCloud connections and your Mac will speed up incredibly, not only Safari
