Is there any way to fix performance issues with Google Maps in Safari? The performance is extremely laggy compared to Chrome which runs pretty much silky smoothly. Problem occurs both MBP's internal screen and external 4k screen. Discrete graphics do not seem to make any difference in Safari, but in Google Chrome it gives a little performance boost. I've tried latest Safari Technology preview also, but to no avail.

This issue hampers most if not all websites that use Google Maps, ie. Flightradar24 etc.

macOS Monterey 12.6
MacBook Pro 16"
2,3 GHz 8-core Intel Core i9
32 Gt 2667 MHz DDR4
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M, 8 Gt

The fix is called Firefox. I truly mean it. If you're not satisfied with Safari and you don't need Chrome for some specific reason I'd recommend the switch. Plus you'll get an open sourced software with much better privacy level.

Same situation with me with a 2019 iMac with Safari. It is extremely laggy. It started 10 days ago. Before that, it worked like a charm.
Maybe it is an Apple strategy to force us to use Apple Maps ;-)
Joke aside, if anyone knows what to do, that would be great

I've had this happen a few times: graphics really blocky, trackpad controls not working. At the moment there's a problem on default with the 3D and the movement is either very fast or laggy.
In your case where it's laggy you can try using another 'user agent. It's a bit of a pain but the problem is definitely at the maps end and they will probably fix it in a few days.
What I mean is you first have to enable the 'developer' menu by going into 'preferences'> advanced tab and check the relevant box at the bottom of the page.
In the developer menu second line down is 'user agent' and that gives you the option to make Safari simulate other browsers (you used to be able to use older versions too but that seems to have gone)
So you make it behave like Firefox or Edge for instance and then it seems to work perfectly- for me anyway. I haven't tried all the options.
You'll probably have to put it back afterwards but it's not particularly difficult. Still a bit of a pain though.

Shocking, Google decides to use Chrome-specific accelerations so their own sites are slow in other browsers.

in Safari go to "Develop > User Agent > Google Chrome - MacOS"
Helped for me

Funnily enough, choosing "Developer -> User Agent -> FireFox - macOS" works even better for me...

Just wanted to pipe in that I'm having the exact same problem. Was an issue on Safari in 12.6 and now 13.0. Not the fault of either OSes, but rather, Google Maps. Switching the user agent worked a treat.

Hopefully Google will fix this soon.

Yes. I found it too, that changing the "user agent" helped few days ago, but today for some reason nothing helped. Only fix was to clear the Safari's cache and cookies from all pages related to google. Still laggy on default, but at least smooth again with the "user agent" change.

Same problem here. For the past week or two I have noticed extremely laggy performance with G.Maps in safari. Even dragging the map around takes several seconds. Feels like dialup. Hoping Ventura 13.0 fixes things.
