Safari: High CPU Usage

Hi everyone,
After calling Apple to complain about the temperature of my new Macbook Pro under low-load conditions, the person instructed me to check the Activity Monitor to see if any programs were using a lot of CPU.

It turns out that at times with only 1 or 2 tabs open, Safari is using 50% of my CPU as well as 400-500 MB of physical memory! (I have 1 GB). I've cleared the cache to no avail.

One symptom I've noticed is that when playing (play-money) games using the java applet on pokerroom.com, I consistently get "slow connection" warnings and am basically unable to play. The only time I've been able to play on pokerroom on my new laptop is when I first got it, prior to transferring over any of my files from my old computer and before installing the 10.4.7 update.

Should I try to do a re-install, or is this the normal behavior for Safari? Are there several issues at play here? (Safari being a memory hog and also I've seen some threads where Safari has problems holding connections?). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!
 
I'm getting this more and more, but I think it's site-specific. I would imagine it comes down to some Javascript not running properly. It's really annoying. I'm having to run two browsers - Firefox usually works a bit better - to get any work done.
 
What websites are you surfing at?


I have found if you surf any website with alot of Java usage, it will use alot of your CPU. I have been using a beta version of Java that was designed around the Intel core and found that although it did not fix the issue, it did lower the usage so that the system did not get as hot as it did.

Let's see Web forums and wikipedia were the last time I checked. :S
 
I use to get this all the time. I switched to Camino, just like DevilsReject. It runs great.
 
It it site specific. Try it in another browser, it will probably do the same thing.

Also, everyone should use Menu Meters to see how much load there CPU is actually under.
 
i have had the exact opposite experience, insanely high cpu usage on camino with only a few tabs open. safaria occasionally shoots up there for a bit, but calms down, whereas camino just cruises along using 70% of cpu. other than that, i reallly like camino.

If you have Rapport from Trusteer installed. that may be your problem as well. many people are having the same issues with this software.
 
Safari was pegging a CPU at 100% any time I opened Facebook. I found that my FB Purity Safari extension was hopelessly outdated. As soon as I uninstalled it, my CPU dropped below 10%.

So first, try disabling all of your Safari extensions and see if it improves. If so, go back in and re-enable them, one at a time, until you find the culprit.
 
Safari is buggy on many Macs

I would advise anyone to use Firefox or Chrome instead.

Me too but its really personal preference. At times I have my Firefox up using quite some amounts of RAM. To solve this issue (at least for me) I simply end its process and load it up (works both on my iMac and Gaming Rig).

Try updating flash/java and Safari its self and restart machine and see how it goes. As others have said use other browsers with the same websites opened up and compare the RAM usage with the Safari to see whether its the website or possibly something else.

If its only Safari and you have done updating etc... then maybe do a virus scan, maybe there is some sort of malware/adware that is using up Safari causing to have high RAM usage.

But first of all, updating first and then compare it with other browsers.
