Safari is rubbish and won't download stuff

Why is safari so rubbish?

Its always been like this and I find myself having to abandon Safari (the worst browser ever created) and go back to using chrome/firefox/opera.

So I just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion and when I went to youtube it said blocked plug-in and that I needed to update Adobe Flash. It then forwards me to adobe flash for the security update. I click on download and all safari does is load up a blank page with this in the address bar: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/11.3.300.265/install_flash_player_osx.dmg

its pathetic that safari cannot even start a download. The same thing happened when i tried to install google chrome or firefox previously. I had to use opera to download.

what is going on? is this happening to all mac users?

I would like to use Safari especially with the new features in ML but if this cannot be fixed I will have to go back to chrome.

Not sure what's going on there. I upgraded to ML on my iMac and have had no issues downloading things. Then again I haven't tried anything Flash related, maybe it just hates that.

Nope, Safari is coded in a way that this happens only to whiney little school girls. Works fine (and exceptionally well) for the rest of us.

I just hope either Google, Firefox or Opera will hurry up and release an update to incorporate features such as pinch and scroll through tabs etc. Because Apple isn't doing a good job with Safari as its full of these bugs :/

I just went over to CNET and tried to download a bunch of stuff. Safari worked flawlessly and perfectly for me every single time.

I've downloaded various DMG files using safari ML and never had problems.

From what I recall, I'm pretty sure this includes virtualbox and logmein.

New on ML so just a suggestion, Safari is far from rubbish quite happy with ML so far.

ML safari working great here too. Downloading everything and anything, at least what it used to be able to download. Maybe you need to check again for some software updates again?

They all had those features for years you just have to use them.
I don't think the pinch is very useful as I need my pinch gesture for zooming in and out.
Opera has had a sort of similar preview feature forever I think. Just click the right mouse wheel button and start scrolling. Can also be replicated with BetterTouchTool gestures.

Here is my BTT config.
It has similar stuff enabled and more for Opera, Safari, Chrome. I only left out FF as I rarely use it. Easily fixed though.
You only miss out on fancy animations. I think they are mostly useless and slow anyway.

Use three finger swipe up to close a tab.
three finger down open a new tab.
three finger middle click open in background is there too.
two finger tip tab to switch left and right to next previous tab.
single key tip tab is the same as three finger swipes just because I was used to them from Opera. Opera with a common mouse with two keys always worked the same. hold one button click the other and it goes that direction. Really old feature again.

Seriously just use the inbuilt features that have always existed. Safari never was a great browser. I don't get why everybody waits for Apple to enable yet another gesture when all you really need to do is find the shortcut and link them with whatever gesture you want.
And when it comes to browsers there is usually a short cut for just about anything.

Just install BetterTouchTool. Open preferences. Bottom left click on import load the configuration file. Change whatever suits you. There are also some shortcuts for Window Management and I still run SL so some stuff might not work well with ML settings. Especially in the global settings that might be the case. You might have to disabel the used gestures in the OSX touchpad settings. I am not really sure what happens if both are set.

BTT is idiot proof and works really well. Stop waiting for Apple to give you new gestures. Especially the three finger swipe up/down is something that imo should really be default because it works so smoothly.

I suspect this is exactly the issue. The OP is downloading stuff fine, but his security settings aren't allowing it to run once downloaded.

No problems downloading here but it has crashed 3 times since updating to ML. I can honestly say it hasn't done that 3 times all year up until now.

That page is supposed to be blank. Have you checked your downloads folder to see if it actually downloaded. Safari did away with the activity monitor and put a little download icon to the right of the URL bar.

Hey thanks for all that info. very helpful. I will look into doing that with other browsers.

I have changed the settings to allow applications to be downloaded from anywhere. But I still get the same. software downloads just won't start, i don't know if its just software/apps, but safari just hangs there...

I've just had the same issue - but it was because i'd left the SpeedDownload plugin installed in Safari when i did the upgrade.
Downloading the SpeedDownload software from the Yazsoft website (holding down alt/option to get the link to work) and then running the Uninstaller app to completely remove all SpeedDownload elements, empty trash, restart Safari and all download links work correctly now.
Seems SpeedDownload isn't compatible with either ML, Safair6 or both.

unfortunately no. I don't remember ever installing speeddownload so i doubt that will be the problem for me. I guess my only solution is to use chrome.

You might have some download manager that injected its plugin into your safari, which is now broken. For example, iGetter.

The solution is:
1, Disable browser monitoring in your download manager;
2, Go to ~/Library/Safari/Extensions and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/, find anything possibly related with your download manager, and delete it.

And then you should be seeing things go back to the old way.
