Safari killing OSX

This has happened twice now. I'd be using Safari and suddenly it locks up the entire system. It'll sit that way for at least a minute or two before recovering... for maybe another 20-30 seconds, then do it again.

If I quit Safari, things return to normal. But if I start it back up, the issue resumes. The only fix is to reboot.

This happened last night before I went to bed. I quit Safari and left it that way in case it just needed time. Came in this morning and restarted Safari. Immediately the problem returned. Everything was frozen solid. Dock was out, Activity Monitor was frozen, nothing at all responded. I ended up doing a hard reboot. But since then, it's been fine.

The computer is a 2013 rMBP i5 2.6 with 16 gig of RAM.

I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who has these problems. Seems to me that El Capitan is buggier than Lion, which is saying something.

perhaps...export your bookmarks, reset safari completely? (then reimport your bookmarks). be warned, this will take all cookies etc with it. OR...create a test user admin account, and try running safari there. this will tell you if the issue is with the app or with your user account.

safari seems fine here (and i have a bunch of extensions); in fact, el capitan seems less buggy than any mac OS here since 10.6.8...

If it starts to happen more often, I'll try that. Meanwhile maybe a future update will cure it.

try a test account, pretty simple to do. worse-case scenario: chrome...

Does it shoot up in ram usage perhaps indicating a memory leak? But do as fisher king stated, and reset it for sure (don't think a future update will solve it though it could) - something weird (safari extension or otherwise) may be causing it - and a rest won't make you lose your files if its synced -

The same freezing has happened to me multiple times after El Capitan 10.11.2 update, and it seems to happen when i close one tab in safari, and i only have like 5 tabs open in once. hope it gets fixed.
My mac is macbook pro retina mid 2014.

Ditto what fisherking said re: resetting Safari.

In the past, I've had Safari issues when the history gets huge. Ergo, I have the keep history option set to 30 days. Nice compromise.

One other thing that might be an issue, as others have pointed out, add-ons/extensions. For me, it was ad blockers. This was a way back, but, a major release of Safari came out and it was pig slow and having other issues. Switched to different ad blocker, everything fine.

and what nobomac said about adblockers...so true. i've switched up a couple of times, when sites started loading slowly... and that's always helped.
