My bookmark bar, complete with all my links, was happily sitting in Safari.

Then I minimised the Safari window, and when I returned, the bookmark bar has gone. Preferences says that it's still on 'show bookmark bar' is ticked. I've tried quitting safari, I've rebuilt permissions. The bookmarks are still there - I can 'show all bookmarks' from the bookmark menu - just the bar has gone

Any ideas where it might have gone to and how I can get it back - hadn't realised how much I depended on it for casual browsing unti it wasn't there.

I had the same problem

I had this same problem and I could not figure it out for about a month so I asked a friend and he suggested that it might just be a keyboard shortcut so I tried looking it up and did not find it so then I thought maybe if I just try (command shift b) for bookmarks and what do ya know my bookmarks bar came back so try that it may help. I was just so excited that this worked I had to come post it here for others struggling with this.

My Safari bookmark bar does not show even when I select "Show bookmark bar

Until yesterday, my first 5 or 6 bookmarks showed in a bookmark bar at the top of my dock. Now I get a blank space, even when I select "Show bookmarks bar" with the "View" menu. Even when I've clicked on "Include bookmark bar" and "show top sites" under Safari preferences it still does not work. Any suggestions?

My top bookmarks (the last 5 or 6 I added) used to show in a horizontal bar at the top of my screen, just under the address bar (which does show). I get only a line and a blank horizontal column. All my bookmarks show in a vertical column on the right when I press "bookmarks bar" in the Bookmarks menu. So it's not a disaster, but it was convenient to show the most recent bookmarks permanently at the top so I could just click on them. As I said, even when I press "show bookmark bar" under the View menu, nothing happens. And I've tried various choices under Safari preferences without success.

Try cmd-Shift-B (suggested above) and see if that shows the Bookmarks Bar. That's just the keyboard shortcut for the menu command, so I doubt it will work given your trouble.

But, what you describe is not how my Safari (5.0.2) works. I have to intentionally make a bookmark in the Bookmarks Bar. It's not just my "most recent" bookmarked sites.

I also doubt that anything in Reset Safari... will fix that. Maybe a fresh Safari plist file would help, but I'm not sure what settings that may influence.

If you still have a Safari disk image, you could reinstall it. Or, just download the highest version you can run and reinstall that.

Missing Bookmark Bar

Thanks for the suggestions. Strangely, the bar reappeared for a while yesterday, but I don't know what I did to make it reappear. When I restarted the computer today, the bar disappeared again. I'll just live with it until I can figure out what's making it come and go.

Well, try the plist thing, found here:
HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences
Quit Safari
Drag com.apple.safari.plist to your Desktop
Open Safari. This makes a "fresh" plist file.
Is the bookmarks bar back? If so, it was probably a corruption in that file. You can Trash the one you moved out of Preferences.

Bookmark bar not showing

It's very mysterious. The bar disappears when I reboot after shutting down the computer, but just "magically" reappears within a half-hour. Right now it's showing; when I turned on Safari about two hours ago it was not showing, and I did not try anything, at least not consciously, to make it appear.

It's really a minor problem since I can get all my bookmarks by pressing "bookmarks bar" under the Bookmarks menu. It's just a convenience to have the latest bookmarks added show at top and they seem to show as long as I keep the computer turned on for a while.

I have a much bigger problem trying to connect my brand new IMac Desktop to my Comcast internet router, but that's a topic for a different thread!

Thanks for the help though.
