Hi, I’m wanting to upgrade from the 3rd generation iPad Air to the IPP 12.9. My use case is having plenty of screen real estate in Safari for online shopping when I don’t feel like climbing on the computer. I prefer desktop view vs mobile view.

I was wondering if people could visit this website: https://www.instacart.com/ on their 12.9 inch IPP and their 11 inch IPP and take a screenshot of how the website looks and how much of the site shows on the tablet.
I’d like screenshots of portrait view and also landscape view.

I’d also like to know your zoom settings for each SS. I typically use 50% zoom in order to see more of the screen, so would be interested in seeing that zoom ratio along with 75%, 85%, and 100%.

If desktop view on the 12.9 is appreciably better than the 11 inch, I’d like to know that. If the difference is non-existent, maybe I can save some money.

You don't really need access to an iPad to do this - you can do a pretty good job of approximating it using developer tools in Chrome and Safari.
This is interesting, thanks. But I noticed that it’s discussing viewing mobile sites or mobile views. I use desktop view on my iPads so I rather know how much of the desktop view of a site fits on the 12.9 and 11“ screens.

I tried the simulator in Safari and they didn’t have an option for the 11” iPP.

Here’s how the 10.5 iPP looked which looks about the same on my 10.5” iP Air 3 when I’m using 100% page zoom:

Then the iPP 12.9 option:

IPP 12.9 simulation .png

Then regular desktop computer screen size 1920 x 1080:

Desktop simulation 1920x1080.png

So I can see that at 100% zoom there is an appreciable difference between 10.5 and 12.9.

At 50% zoom on my 10.5” iPad Air 3, which is the zoom I usually use, I can see a good deal more:

But I’d still like to see the difference between 11 inch iPP screen and 12.9 inch iPP screen. M2 or M1 if they’re the same size.

If someone could post the same SS on an iPP 11” at 100% zoom and 50% zoom, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing that. And I see that the text is still quite legible while showing more of the website.

I used Apple’s comparison feature and found that the M1 and the M2 iPad Pro 11” have the same measurements, screen size, and resolution.

So if someone with a M1 or M2 iPP 11” could post a screenshot of the instacart website, I’d greatly appreciate it. Please let me know which zoom you’re using and if it’s landscape or portrait.

All of the 11" iPad Pro models have the same display size, resolution and aspect ratio, so any 11" model would suffice. My wife has an 11" iPad Pro (A12X processor). I'll try to get a screenshot of hers today at some point.

Yes.

Edit: The 12.9” iPP also has a high DPI mode that gives you more screen space at cost of smaller text and icons (a system setting, separate from Safari zoom level).
Oh hey, my 11'' has the More Space option too.

I should probably post a screenshot when I get home.

Interesting. I thought only the 12.9" models had that. I should see if the latest iPadOS version for my wife's 11" gives her that option (A12X). Perhaps it's an M1/M2 option only due to the required GPU scaling...

Yeah, I guess an M chip allows extra scaling.

All M1 and M2 iPads have the More Space option (including the Air 5). It gets you around 12.9" normal zoom screen real estate in the 10.9-11" form factor.

That's one of the reasons I'm (im)patiently waiting for the M1 11" to pop up on Apple's refurb store instead of going for the A12X/A12Z iPP refurbs. For me, More Space zoom is an incredibly useful feature.

I keep wanting to enable this on my Air 5 and I keep forgetting that it’s iPadOS 16 only. I’ve seen screenshots of the difference and it’s a pretty useful feature!

That’s good to know that’s an M chip feature and not just a Pro feature. I wish they made it available for pre-M chip devices. Would be nice to have it on my Air 3.

Never mind about posting any more Instacart website screenshots on the 11”. After a little more research, I’ve discovered that the Instacart website seems to be poorly coded regardless of whether I’m on my Mac Mini using full screen view or using the 12.9” iPad Pro simulator in Safari.

Screenshot 2023-02-09 at 10.52.44 PM.png Screenshot 2023-02-09 at 10.51.56 PM.png

The first image is full screen on my desktop computer. The 2nd one is the 12.9” simulator. I can’t imagine the 11” would fare better than either of those.

What about a different shopping website? Can someone post an SS of Amazon or B&H Photo on the iPad Pro 11”? Or Office Depot or Staples?

I’d still like to get an idea of how the 11” displays desktop view vs the 12.9” on online shopping websites. For some reason, the simulator in Safari doesn’t offer a choice for the 11”. ☹️

Anyone? Looking for a screenshot taken from an 11” iPad Pro of online shopping websites such as Amazon, B&H Photo, Office Depot, or Staples. Desktop view, please.

I mean, your air 3 should suffice as an 11” benchmark
The Air 3 is only 10.5”. A half inch might not sound like much but I suspect there’s still a noticeable difference on how much is displayed on the screen at one time. The point of a screenshot of a 11” screen is so I won’t have to guesstimate.
