I've noticed that Safari's performance degrades noticeably over time. For instance, it's lightening fast immediately after a cold boot. Rendering is quick, and chequerboarding while scrolling through a webpage is minimal. However, after a few hours of use, rendering is definitely slower and chequerboarding is present to a far greater degree. If I force quit safari and start it again, it's back to normal, but eventually starts to slow down over time again.

This issue is definitely independent to that of having multiple tabs open. I've deliberately kept only one tab open while experimenting with this just to confirm that fact.

I know that Safari's tendency to reload pages while switching between tabs is universally experienced (and lamented), but I haven't seen any complaints about the issue I've raised. Has anyone else experienced this? I just want to know if this is a common problem, or if my iPad is suffering from unique difficulties.

I use the web browser on my iPad more than any other app and while I have settled on Atomic as my browser of choice, I never noticed that while using Safari.

I have had to do 2 hard resets in the last week and I know what you mean. Problem is mines permanently slow. I think it's more to do with my wi-fi issue though. I have to wait for longer than Is really acceptable to load sites when I scroll down. If I load the same pages on my android handset I can scroll down the whole page and it will be loaded. Can't do that on the iPad. Have to wait for that dam checkerboard thing to go away.

...

This is definitely a memory problem. Either a leak or perhaps just that over time, since safari stays open in the background it remembers each page it loads and over time will tend to use more and more memory. Key is to jailbreak and use virtual memory, or use backgrounder to set it so safari closes on quit or just use a different browser like atomic

i bought 4 different browsers from the app store and found that Perfect Browser outperformed them all and is much better then Safari.
