Safari / Realplayer plug-in

Hi, I just got an iMac Core Duo. It's my first Mac, so please excuse my ignorance. I downloaded Realplayer 10, and installed it, apparently successfully, but when I try and play a video from the BBC News website a message pops up saying 'plugin not found'. How do I make Safari see Realplayer?

I expect the RealPlayer app works under Rosetta. You would have noticed the "Welcome to RealPlayer... etc" after installing, I assume.

If the installer works correctly, there should be a "RealPlayer Plugin" and "Real Player.xpt" alias in the /<yourHD>/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

These aliasses find their originals in the contents of the RealPlayer.app.

Please check to see of those aliasses (shortcuts) exist in the directory mentioned above.

The aliases do exist, and Realplayer works fine as a standalone player. But something is just not connecting in Safari. I'm trying to view a video on the BBC News website. I first tried before I had Realplayer, and that message came up. Now I have Realplayer the message is still coming up. Perhaps a setting has got stuck in a cookie? Is this possible?

You would have to run Safari under Rosetta to allow a PowerPC plugin to work. You can do that by getting info on Safari in the Finder and turning on "open using Rosetta".

Hopefully more native plugins will show up soon and get rid of the need to run browsers under emulation.

Hmm, I have the same problem. (intel iMac + relaplayer-plugin). If the website streaming real audio is setup so that I need to listen to the stream in a stand-alone player, such as NPR's Fresh Air or Car Talk, it works fine. It seems as if BBC's website tries to open it in a Safari window and gives me that error message. Fortunately, it gives the option of listening to it in a stand-alone player. Try that...

I think this is because Safari is intel, but realplayer is PPC binary.

I have the exact same problem with my G5 iMac, i tried everything but jst learned to live with it like it is.

I just copied Safari.app to another location and renamed it safari_rosetta.app. Then inside the "Get Info" window for safari_rosetta, check "Launch under rosetta" option. Now, when you double click "safari_rosetta.app" it will launch a bit slowly, but once it does, I can listen to BBC's world service broadcasts without any trouble. "Stopped" error might be coming up if the site is too busy.

This is a wild guess, but check your system wide audio settings, something like MIDI something or another. I don't have access to my Mac right now, so I cannot tell you the exact name. Apparently some apps inadvertently change that setting to something like 96kHz, which the hardware cannot handle. Maybe that's your problem. That setting needs to be 44.1kHz or 48kHz. Sorry, I don't remember the exact number of the top my head.

Thanks for trying theBB. I went to Utilities/Audio and Midi, but the only place I could change from 96000 to 48000 was in Audio Input. I tried anyway, but it didn't solve the problem. Oh well. I wonder if it isn't a Rosetta problem.

Realplayer plugin and Mac core duo

Using the BBC site I also found RealPlayer a no-go...plugin not detected. But alternative browsers such as MS Explorer and Firefox are OK. No doubt Rosetta is operational in the latter.

On your Mac search for com.RealNetworks.data

and delete it along with the RealPlayer

Close Safari and re-install RealPLayer from the dmg


Works for me on my 17" iMac Intel Safari 2.0.4 anyway

Just to eliminate any confusion here, Realplayer is a universal binary application, meaning that it (and it's web plug-in) runs natively on Intel Macs.

The Realplayer-based vids on the BBC news website work fine on my iMac C2Duo with Safari. There is absolutely no need to run Safari under Rosetta in order to get it to work. If you have trouble, reinstall Realplayer, and make sure you download the latest universal binary version.
