i'm pretty sure this has been an issue for a while, but its just getting unbearably frequent.

i type a search query into the location/search bar and it does... nothing.

trying to reload or retyping does nothing.

open chrome and the search bar works without issue.

quit and restart safari and it starts working again... until it fails again. multiple times a day. really frustrating.

exactly why I stopped using Safari, apparently that search bar uses apple servers to provide results...

Makes sense, there is a lot of inconsistency in how it behaves. For sites like Amazon, half the time it will show up as a "suggested website", and half the time it won't.

I'm assuming you are using OS X (not iOS).

I prefer safari to chrome because I get better battery life and the developer tools are comparable to chrome (for my needs at least). The search hang/lock has been happening to me on and off for a while now, and oddly it only happens when I have google as my search engine. If I type in a search and hit enter, it hangs... if I hit enter again it goes.

I just recently noticed something though that might be the culprit. Under Safari>Preferences>Search there is a checkbox for "Enable Quick Website Search", and a "manage websites" button next to it. I cleared the managed websites list and it "snappy" again. Might have to do with safari checking the pre-fetched or cached websites first, then going to Google. For now I've unchecked the Quick Search and its running fine. Lets see if it continues.

Hope this helps.

Thanks I'll try that out. I want to use safari primarily, too. :)
