Safari skips over the search results page when using the previous page button.
For example: I search "bananas" and click on a result which brings me to a webpage. I decide I want to choose a different website and use the back button. Rather than returning to the search results page, I am sent to my starting page.
Here is a quick (10 sec) screen recording:
WHY is this happening? It makes browsing the web effectively impossible. I am running the latest version of Monterey and Safari. I have tried disabling extensions, clearing cache, restarting. The only solution thus far seems to be switching my search engine from Google to an alternative. Others have had this issue but no solution provided: Safari not going back to search results??? - MacRumors Forums ; Safari back button does not go back to Google results - Apple Discussions ; Prevent safari from skipping search pages when going back - Reddit r/MacOS.
