Is there any way to click on a link in safari and have the new tab open up in the background? It always goes to the new page instead of staying on the current page.

Is there a setting that I can change?

Nope.

But I'd highly recommend checking out Atomic Browser. It's highly customizable and has true tabbed browsing. I can't even use Safari anymore.

+1. Try out lite version for free and purchase entire thing if you want for only a buck. I'm currently on the lite version but quite honestly I use Safari more as I don't really do true tabs unless working on a project or something and Safari has all my history and bookmarks from my computer.

You can import your bookmarks with the paid version.

You can also try icab, which is my personal preference, easy to import bookmarks, has a nice interface and also has proper tabbed browsing.

I personally found that Atomic crashed too much and that it did not run well on one of my favorite websites, but that's just my personal view. Many others have never had a problem with Atomic.

I have been using atomic. I like it but it crashes too much for my liking. The "open in background" tab thing that pops up is what promted my question.

I like tabbed better but I like the way safari looks better but I wish it would allow me to open another page from a link but stay on the current page.

Or try Downloads HD - it has a tabbed browser and allows you to save individual web pages (for later reading, which is awesome in my book). It also allows you to download videos that are imbedded in web pages (e.g. YouTube). Which again I think is great. This way you can save those videos that take forever to load and then watch them at your leisure, even without the internets.

For what it's worth, I've been using Atomic for over a month, and it's never crashed. Perhaps you should delete it and reinstall it?

What do you mean you like how Safari looks better? It renders pages the same as Safari. Plus, with full screen mode, you get more screen real estate.

Not all pages render the same. One in particular is facebook. It looks very much different in atomic browser.

Looks exactly the same to me.

Perhaps you should check your settings and see how you have Atomic set to be identified as.......

Plus, i just can't go back to not having multitouch options (swipe to move fwd and back, etc)
