Hey guys and gals;

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've created a petition for Apple to urge them to include tabbed browsing in Safari. At least one prominent mac news site has picked up the link as a story, and I'm hoping more will in the future.

Either way, the petition can be found here:

http://www.petitiononline.com/safaritb/petition.html

If you want tabbed browsing and autofill, why not go and sign it? It'll only take a second or two of your time. :)

******

To the trolls: Yeah, Apple might not listen. Then again they might. Either way, I still believe that (grassroots) democracy is a viable way to get things done, and I've got nothing to lose by having started the petition.

I don't disagree with the idea, but your much more likely to get it by flooding apple's input from safari (through the bug report, they want feature requests too) with the request from lots of different people. I'm sure they're working on it now anyways. Good idea though!

Agreed. Safari will have tabbed browsing, but it won't be the default setup. Just give 'em some time (and "bug" them with the Bug report button).

What do you mean it won't be the default setup? The nice thing about tabs is you can open them when and if you want to. For example in Mozilla if I right click (yes I have a thre button mouse) on a link I get the option to open it in a new tab.

Before Apple will convince me to use Safari they need to include tabs and comprehensive security and privicy features like mozilla. I love being able to set cookie prefs on a site by site basis.

I think what he means is that you will have go "activate" tabs if you want to use them. That way people who dont want them wont get confused by them.

if you expect Apple to just include tabs browsing then you are being pretty narrow minded. This is clearly a feature apple has decieded is unnecessarily complicated to implement. Tabbed browsing are essentially the two-buttonned mouse of web browsers. We have a chance now with Safari being in public beta to create such a public uproar as to potencially get Apple to change the view. File bug reports, sign the petition and get others to do so if you can, because chances are Apple will never incorporate tabbed browsing. The public beta stage of development gives us the opportunity to get the features we want, so you should take full advantage of this while it lasts. now go and sign the man's petition and file another bug report.

Tabs are a mini-revolution, the added efficiency to handle multiple streams of infomation quickly and efficiently have made it utterly essential for me. Browse though 10-15 news sites, rack up 30 odd tabs of stories i wish to read then work though them at my leasure of time, mutiple google seaches and results, the lsit jsut goes on. I won't be able to use safari until it has them.

tell that to apple not us. you are preaching to the choir here.

i just emailed apple MY version of the tabs...
what i think they should be....ultra minimal
icons that reside in the main 1/4 window bar.
thats how i have my browers since i dont use
buttons or links or menus to navagate SAFARI.
i use cocoa gestures HAHAHAHA WOOOOOHOOO
i just wave my hand around

anyway sent them thhis pge as well
as screenshots and told them to
incorporate tabbed browsing to spoil us but make
the "tabs" little icons like the snap back icons and they can reside in the very top bar by the web page title but off to the side. that way when i hide all of SAFARIS chrome i can still use the snap back icons "TABS" to go to a site thats ready to be viewed. click one of these non abtrusive icons and you snap to that site :D way better then tabs....thats so goofy....lets get beyond this staples office supply metaphor :D anyway. keep it simple. simple is good! complicated BadDDD! doh :D

Banner blocking is another feature which Apple should be told about.

Tabbed Mozilla with 95% of adertising removed is like watching 12 channels on ReplayTV.

So little wasted time, so much to take in.

On an off topic note, did you know that MTV has successfully pushed two 6 minute commercial breaks + fluff in a 30 minute show to the masses...I was shocked!

oh right, i was just thinking, god i wish i can
surn that annoying banner off. it would be
nice to play aniated banners only once.
then they turn off.

As a webmaster advocate, I'd like to throw my two cents in on banner/ad blocking. :)

Like it or not, Banner ads and yes, pop-up ads are the way most sites generate revenue.

MacRumors was losing money for many months, after implementation of some new sources of ad revnue (including the occasional pop-up) as well as transition to a new server, MacRumors is in the green.

But know this... if enough people block banners on this site, ad revnue will go down, and if MacRumors loses enough money for sequential months, it will go down. I like MacRumors - but I also like to eat.

I don't mind the occasional pop up ad or anything but some sites take it too far. It's these sites that are ruining it for sites such as macrumors. Apple is just responding to this concern. I'm glad they've added this feature because of the sites that have too many pop ups or have pop ups that continue to pop up after every link you click. If certain sites were more responsible with their advertising this wouldn't be an issue. Besides, why not just have the ads on the sites themselves instead of an annoying pop up. I will refuse to click on them just out of principal...it doesn't need to be shoved in my face.

Well, as you seem to have a balance between 'good' and 'bad' advertising, and you have it laid out right, I get all the macrumors.com banners (redlightrunner, GC, etc.) but not the servedby.whatever banners.

Additionally, I am unsure if Moz downloads the banner but does not display it, or if it skips the request. If it initiates the request, but does not display it, it is the computer equivalent of Fast Forward. You get paid for the impression, but I don't have to see it.

Having NEVER followed a banner of a business I did not mean to go to anyway, I am certain I am not missing the next great thing in hair regrowth techniques, or the opportunity to install a tiny camera in my bathroom.

Vertical marketing is more interesting as a revenue stream for the advertiser, and the site owner, and the viewer, and I would hope that you have deals worked out with Mac related businesses to pay better than the occasional Windows ad some have seen around these parts!

i am wondering how often, i have to remind Apple that i want tab browsing...

everytime i use safari and miss tab browsing? do i click on the bug button everytime? and bug them? :p

Well, in the long term, this is not true. If a small number of people utilize this technique, then yes, sites get credit for the banner... but if it was widely implemented.... I guarentee that if PowerMax or MacUniveristy starts getting a click-through rate of 0% and no new sales, they will stop running ads.

Or, if you start getting a 0% click through rate at any ad network, they will stop handling your ad inventory.

And to clarify... pop-ups are a different case -- they have been abused enough that I understand that people want to block them. I don't have a problem with Apple implementing this sort of feature... but I'm specifically commenting on banner ad blocking... which is a whole different story.

Whether you have personally followed a banner or not is also not a convincing arguement against allowing banner ads to load. Advertising works - whether you like it or not. :)

For example -- You know who x10 is... and I know you're going to say that you would never buy anything from them.... But you know who they are. I know who they are. Many people know who they are... and look - I just brought them up in a conversation. Maybe you've brought them up in a conversation saying how annoying they are (you just did)... regardless, they are in the consumer's mind... and this thread is an example that their advertising worked.

But like I said... popup's are an extreme. I think banner ads should not be allowed to be easily blocked in a browser. And if they are, I don't think users should block them - especially on sites you actually don't want to hurt or actively dislike the webmaster.

As for vertical marketing - sure, I'd love every ad on this site to be Mac-related. But between working more-than-full-time, updating the site, enjoying my free time, etc... I certainly don't have time to run a very good marketing department. :) And I'm not complaining - or asking for sympathy... just saying how it is.
