Safari: This webpage using significant memory

This started recently while streaming baseball games via mlb.com. It is very annoying because it happens while I'm on full screen mode and a white bar at the top of the screen appears with the message. It never used to happen as I've been streaming baseball on the same Mac for years. Something must have change software wise.

Is there any way from preventing this message from appearing on the screen?

I'm on a 13" 2012 cMBP i7 2.9 12GB RAM

As to changes “software”-wise…you can bet that there have been numerous changes to the MLB streaming website over the years. Flash, which I’d be pretty sure is being implemented, is updated an annoying amount of times each year.

IMO, every browser has high resource usage and none of them are better than any others on MacOS. Chrome tends to work better sometimes — it doesn't decide to block plugins randomly, it doesn't decide to kill your various tabs, it doesn't spin up warnings about resource usage (OP's issue), and its bundled version of Flash stays up-to-date. On the flip side, Safari can sometimes be faster and its 1Password plugin is more reliable.

Personally — I switch between Safari and Chrome interchangeably. If something doesn't work in one, it will in the other. Neither holds any sort of crown in my world. They both suck; they all suck.

At work — I recommend our employees use Chrome due to the plugin issues described above. Do you know how many people put in tickets after seeing Safari's "blocked plugin" message? Telling them to use Chrome solves 100% of those tickets.

If you’re on a powerful (CPU/GPU) Mac you may not notice a difference in browsers.

Where you can really feel a difference is on older Macs. I have a 2008 Unibody MacBook that I’m running Sierra (unsupported installation version) and the results are like night and day.

Chrome just can’t stream video full screen. Safari is better but the MacBook gets hot and the fans ramp up to max, probably.

The little known browser “Maxthon 5” runs full screen video without any of the horrible side effects. It was pure luck for me discovering this. It’s not a good browser for everyday use but it’s what I use for streaming all video. It would be interesting to know why it works so well.

Everytime it goes to a commercial break and then comes back, the progress bar reappears at the bottom of the screen.

I'm running the latest version of OS X, 10.13.4. I'm also on the latest version of flash.

The MLB website has changed a lot over the past year, however, this issue just started up about a week ago.

I have a 2010 MBP 17". Safari runs like absolute garbage on it, though it helps with battery life.

Chrome runs a bit better usually but takes a big hit on battery life.

However, booting into Windows makes the whole machine and browsers work 10x better. I can't even really play 1080p YouTube videos in Safari, and trying to scrub in the video pretty much freezes the browser. But in Windows, I can have 3 1080p videos streaming and scrub through them without a hiccup.

Of course, running Windows also consumes battery much more quickly than running OSX. So depending on what I'm doing, I have to decide which to use. I might replace the machine this year anyways though.

I don't see why people use Safari in 2018 tbh. It's just so glitchy and unresponsive.

I have a brand new (used) computer I am still setting up and am getting that message while surfing Facebook. I never got it before on my older 2009 iMac running El Capitan and before that Snow Leopard, despite having driven it pedal to the metal into the dirt, filling it up to less than 5% remaining space and having more tabs open than anyone in the right mind should and leaving them open and hardly ever restarting. So now that I this "new" machine, which is an upgrade to a Fusion system, running High Sierra and has virtually nothing on it yet, am not leaving it running or loads of tabs open etc, I am barely doing anything on the browser(s) I'm very perplexed about this recurring message. I switch between Safari and Chrome as I found Safari was being snotty about streaming video on Netflix and/or Prime. I had stopped using Safari on my old machine due to various issues I no longer recall...
