Safari update?

I have just switched and slowly adjusting to Mac OS X. I really like Safari, it does almost all that I need and looks great, however there is one problem. Being a Mozilla user for a long time I really like this feature when you right-click on a link and in the pop-up menu choose "Save link target as..". This allows you to specify the location as well as the name of the file. Surprisingly, Safari only lets you download in one location and you cannot change the name of the file until it's downloaded. Or maybe this is possible, I am just doing something wrong?
I often look for publications on the web and save them in different folders. I also use the name of the paper as the filename. So this is really important to me. Of course I can use Mozilla in parallel, but I would rather be consistent with my browser (you know, bookmarks, etc.)

Well, Safari was in beta since Jan, and it went 1.0 on June 23rd, so it's only less than 2 months old...as far as an update, Panther is going to have Safari version 1.1 shipping with it. I can't say what improvements/added features it has, but hopefully that answers a few of your questions.

I hope we get more options to manage cookies... the bookmark management could be better, too, but the cookie-settings is where it lacks IMO.

I admit I haven't used Safari much, but I swear, for a 1.0 version that was just starting beta in Jan of this year, it's pretty impressive. And I just love brushed metal!
the ability to add spacers in between the favs in the bookmark menu (simple tho it may sound) would be very handy, at the moment its a whopper of a list that takes a while for my eyes to adjust to b4 I find what I'm lookin for! (or have I just not found that function too!)

I found how 2 have nested bookmark folders now, thanks. Still would like spacers a la Explorer.
how do people use their bookmarks? I always gravitate towards the Menu at the top. Not sure if I can get used to clicking the little bookmark icon and doing it that way.

safari is designed to be the easiest browser to use; period. while this is beneficial in that it keeps the browser lean, we also lose out on lots of the high-level features and customization found in mozilla. for mom and dad just reading email and checking weather.com, having to specify a save location and name for each file gets confusing (it sounds silly, but i know lots of folks who forget how to close a window).
hopefully, apple will implement more features in a later version, but do as they've done with the finder and offer an option for "simple safari" that hides all of the features amateur users don't need. as much as i love safari, i could certainly live with a few more "advanced" features.
I like Safari better than anything I've used, and I've used them all. I think the implementation for tabbed browsing is über-l337, and I love the speed. I know everybody says Camino is just as fast, but it always seems to me that Camino is slower.
I know people have issues with the caching, but for some reason, I've never had any such trouble.
AutoFill doesn't work the way it should. A lot of times, I'll be on a web page with forms, and Safari tells me there's nothing to fill in when I click on the AutoFill button. I give up and type my name into the first field, and only THEN does it decide it wants to fill in the blanks. It's like the guy in the video says, "it's more about tricking the Mac into doing what you want."
I also like the address bar. I have all of my morning websites up there in a folder that I set to auto-tabbing. One click and all of my morning websites spring up! Then I have my work folder and my school folder, and then a few odd links. It's the same as in Camino or IE, but it looks good and I like the auto-tabbing.

The .htaccess bug in v85 is killing me. Anxious to see if its fixed in .5!

Oh, man you have no idea.
We run an .htpasswd protected internal web server.
Various things are restricted via .htaccess and everytime Safari wants to load a page with multiple images and what not, for *every* image I get asked for my username/password (regardless if I click `Remember it''.
yes it would. i think apple has considered this. but it is also one of my pet hates about IE. I like to browse and broswe. If they could hide it like they hide the bookmark bar then it would be good but until then ....
